Custom bandwidth test client

Hi,

An iOS developer here.
I’m thinking to write a small app during a hackathon to act as a bandwidth client for Mikrotik’s Bandwidth Test but cannot find any descriptions of the protocol.

Where would I start and whether I need Mikrotik’s blessing to do that (e.g. if I decide to reverse-engineer the protocol)?
