Data management?

Hi there,

I want to set up a small ISP af about 30 clients and the problem i am having is how do i limit each user to a certain amount of data?

The easiest option would just to give them all uncapped internet but then that would cost me LOADS on my internet side.

How can i assign 1GB to this user and then be able to reset it if needed or add to the amount?

i have a RB433 as the AP with 3 sectors and then i have a RB750 where the internet connection is.

I am also planning on installing Router os onto a pc (that is if its any different to routerboard OS?)

Please help.

You can use hotspot ‘limit-bytes-out’ feature: http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/3.0/aaa/hotspot.php or
you can use usermanager ‘download-limit’ feature: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/User_Manager/Limiting

the limits amount of data right?

Not just the speed?

And do you need a Radius server?

That link does nto show you how to setup a hot spot. it like just had Property Description?

Yes, those links show how to set limits for amount of data downloaded.
You can use just hotspot for AAA, otherwise, you will need a radius server e.g. usermanager. Check the manual to see what either has to offer.
You didn’t ask for help on how to setup hotspot; you asked how to limit data download.

These should guide you. Else, feel free to ask.

Ok sorry, I worded it wrong.

I have no idea where to start,

Right now i have a normal wireless network where anyone can connect (if they know the password) and there are no limits or anything.

What do i need and how do i go about setting up what i need.

I really don’t get those wiki tutorials. They make no sense, i need like step by step set up?

So i gather i either need a Hot spot or Radius Server?

I just want the simplest method to setup to limit amount of data being downloaded. i can get more complex after i have the basics. im only 16 and have just started playing with mikrotik. i kinda get it but i have not come right with the HOTSPOT. I have tried and played for hours and i just cant get the HOTSPOT logon page to show when connecting, and any one can connect and there are no limits. i even followed a video tutorial and it didnt work??? dont know why>

Are you using winbox or CLI?

Winbox.

dont know what CLI is, but im using winbox

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Hotspot_server_setup shows a basic Hotspot setup using Winbox

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Hotspot outlines all the details

ok i followed that tutorial exactly, Step by step. from scratch.
but i still have the same prob. how do you login?

If i go to the internet it redirects tio me a page, it just gives me the " Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error but in the address bar is:

http://hotspot/login?dst=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gogole.co.za%2F

so i gather its redirecting the computers to the login site but there must be some error witht he login site. maybe the mikrotik is not allowign the ebserver to be shared?

It must be something small.
please help

Please help?

Post the output of

/ip dns print
/ip route print detail
/ip firewall export
/ip hotspot export
/ip address print det

Zapnologica I recommend you to attend some trainings, it will be much more effective than to learn every single thing through the forum. see for nearest trainings: http://training.mikrotik.com

i agreee with you,

Just $$$$ and mostly time, im still in school. Dont often get 5 days off to do a course.

and so far i have got quiet far just using the forum (ok i get im quiete painfull asking dum question ALL the time.

But i just want to learn hot spot and the PPPoE server>

But ultimatly i would love to do a course.

Just a quick question.

To setup a PPPoE server sothat the clients have to put in a password and uername on the station.

Do you need RADUIS or can you just have a few users liek in the hotspot.

No, you don’t need RADIUS. http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/PPPoE

Thanks, i act found that just earlier today.

I have figured instead on aking here i must look on the wiki.

i am in the process of testing to see if it works now.

does mikrotik software have the option to limit user bandwidth, like give this user 3gb usage per month, so not limit the speed but limit the amount of data they can use?

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/PPP_AAA

with the link above.

would each client have thier own username and password and then they login via PPPoE and the link speed and cap size is set to each user according to what they pay???
