Hi,
I accidentaly killed my routerboard 450 when i tried to upgrade RouterOS.
I would like to flash the firmware and then install the new RouterOS.
But i can’t connect to him at the boot time with Windows HyperTerminal (WinXP).
I’ve got RB 450 connected to PC with crossover Ethernet cable (IP: 172.16.0.10 Netmask: 255.0.0.0) and serial to USB cable.
I installed USB to serial cable drivers, then set the Prolific USB-to-Serial COM7 port to: 9600b/s, 8data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, hardware flow control (or none).
I never worked with HyperTerminal before and i dont know how to connect → new connection to COM7 with VT100J emulation didn’t work = status in status bar is connected but i can’t see anything at terminal window.
I tried to unplug RB from power source, then plug again and then i hit a key on keyboard (it should show the boot menu) but nothing happened.
How can i determine if even the serial cable is working (Windows says in device manager, that it is ok)?
Thanks for reply
The settings are 115200-8-N-1 with hardware flow. VT100 emulation is correct.
I tried 115200-8-N-1 with the same result.
OOPS! Did I fail to mention the serial cable must be a null-modem cable (like serial version of ethernet crossover).
EDIT: NewEgg has DB9 null-modem adapters.

OK, is there some option how to emulate this via software?
I found: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=895871 , but I’m afraid that it is something little bit different (thisPC to thisPC).
I don’t think so. Serial ports are pretty much hardwired. Almost impossible to turn them around. One pin is strictly send, another is receive.
EDIT: What is the box doing? Is it beeping on start? Does it double-beep when booted?
It’s just a single beep and RJ-45 port diods brifly blinking. Then the active RJ-45 port normally glows.
Looks like you may need that null-modem cable/adapter. Just so you know, it takes a while for that upgrade to complete. Are you waiting a couple of minutes after power-on?
EDIT: Also search this forum for “netinstall”. I have not used it, but it may help you.
A Cisco rollover cable with DB9 adapter works for the serial port.

You might be experiencing a problem with the serial>USB adapter.
I made sure that my laptops had real serial ports when I bought them since we use serial cables often to configure switches and routers.
Good luck,
Tom
