Dealing with High Signal to Noise

Hi Everyone,

I am having a problem with a slow connection, and i think the problem is due to a high Signal to Noise ratio. I have gathered this from research online mostly as i do not know much about mikrotik wireless, nor wireless in itself, so please excuse any ignorance.

I can post the hardware details if that will help, but won’t clutter this with that right now.
The link is direct line of sigh of around 50 Meters.

I have played with it a bit and the best i can get it is to give me around 25mbps, and i was expecting much more. (it is not constant and goes between 40mbps and 10 mbps)

With both devices power set to default i get a signal strength or around -40dBm, but a signal to noise of around 75dBm.
I have read that this is too much and you can try and get it lower by miss aligning the antenna, reducing tx power, or increasing antenna gain.

Decreasing tx power does decrease the signal to noise, but obviously also the signal.
My best link speed is when i have my tx power set to about 6dBm (seems default is 17dBm), and now i have a signal strength of around -65dBm and a signal to noise of 50dBm

Is this good enough?

I read some training manuals and they are talking about throughput’s of close to 200mbps, is this fictional?
I thought this would be easy since it is such a short distance (50m)
What affects your SNR, and what does it mean?
What kinda speeds can i expect and does it normally mean the shorter distance the better?

There seems to be heaps of information on these forums so i am sure i can work everything else out, but i just need some more information about exactly what is the signal to noise, and how do you deal with it if it is too low or too high?

You signal strength should be around -50 to -55. I got a RB600A with N card and a x86 PC with N card on the other site and antennas. I get a very consistent 185 mbit/s TCP when doing 1 iperf session.

if i bump the TX power back up to around 10 i get a good signal, but the signal to noise go up also. Does this mean to noise is introduced by my own radio?
The noise floor is -118dBm
with the better signal and higher signal to noise i get around 14mbps.
How do you normally test for, or deal with a high signal to noise?
