default passwords - any better way

Hello,

I posted some info in the controller section, hopeful for a future better way to onboard and manage CAPS and their defaulted randomized passwords. Since the introduction of this [regulatory requirement], it has created a burden during deployments.

The current process of onboarding “CAPS” with their unique passwords is quite a pain. We are a small MSP; purchase wireless hardware from vendor(s) – we need to keep track of EACH access point default passwords per customer. Either we document it upon receipt, or we request it from distributor. If this is not done, the default password is forever lost when the AP is mounted on ceiling, pole or where ever it lands… Or the sticker fades and a reset performed.

When we do a Routerboard reset - config reset for CAPS mode… default password is re-injected. This is for the devices we drop ship to customer.

We know MikroTik has tools for us to netinstall or customize the install… but that is even more work for pre-config. We dont need to do this with other vendors. Alot of times we drop ship the access points to the customers location.

With a potential MikroTik cloud-hosted solution, there could be a database of serials - we can onboard and register / manage the hardware. Unless there will be something baked into the self hosted controller.

We still have a floating AP at a customer site in which we lost access after a reset. Still need to have tech go onsite and pull AP off ceiling to grab factory password. This costs us time and money.

All in all, a better way to manage the hardware default passwords and onboard the equipment [register, claim device and manage].

Anyone have a better method with managing and deploying the Access points in CAPS mode with the new default admin credentials?
