You’re asking if ROS is compatible with that CPU? Of course it is.
Your worry would be the compatibility between the IDE controller and the rest of the motherboard.
Try posting what you’re using as far as a motherboard and ask if there is anyone with experience with it.

ROS v3 does support multi-core, multi-cpu systems.

As far as installing, I think you need v3 to run SATA drives, all depends on the chipset
As far as VMWare, I have tested using Microsoft Virutal PC and Virtual server. Not VMWARE.
Works for VMWare Workstation Ace Edition 6.0.2 build-59824 without a doubt =)
