Devices on same subnet & same bridge can't talk to each other

It is a seemingly simple scenario where there are 2 devices, both with static IPs on the same subnet, plugged into eth4 & eth5 which are part of the same bridge but for some reason the devices can’t communicate with each other.

I thought this should work by default with no extra configuration…

Any suggestions on things to check for this are appreciated.

Thank you.

eth4 and eth5? On both devices? You can only have network cable from one to the other. Having two cables from one router to the other creates a loop which will cause connectivity issues.

Next if you cloned the config from one router to the other, then interface mac addresses may have been cloned. Two devices with same mac addresses will cause problems. In Winbox > IP > Interface, edit the interface and click reset mac address.

Using Winbox, check the status of the interface. Does it say connected? There are also stats such as dropped packets.

Otherwise yes, your setup should be fairly simple with no extra config.

  • same subnet
  • different IPs
  • Check macs if you’ve cloned config of one router to the other

Make sure eth4 and eth5 doesn’t have the same horizon value set, it should have nothing set on “horizon”
