I have a question about DHCP relay
I have a non mikrotik router that connect to the internet and have a DHCP server insdie
and I don’t have an option to add routing rules for it
I want to add a mikrotik router that will be do all the wanted routing by making him the DHCP for the network
my quesion is
- I need to setup a simple\normal DHCP server on mikrotik? or I need to do something else?
- on the main router I need to setup dhcp relay and give the mikrotik IP ?
- do I need to keep the DHCP server on the main router ?
Thanks,
How big of a Network are we talking here ?
If you are dealing with a typical SOHO-Network,
I would try to deactivate the DHCP-Server on the ISP-Router
Anything else will be Sub-Optimal
Or put the Mikrotik as first and only device connected to that router. That port as DHCP client or fixed IP.
The rest of the network will then be handled by your Tik and its DHCP server.
The first router needs to be able to forward ports if needed for your purposes or put Tik in DMZ.
My home config is like that.
@holvoetn isn’t wrong
especially if you can’t change any setting on the Main ISP-Router.
