Did i get the wrong routerboard or am i doing the wrong thing

so i am new to mikrotik as in only known about it for 2 weeks now, i’m only used to basic networks and that was fine till now.

what i want to do.

i want to setup a wireless network where at least 30 people can be connected at the same time with their own usernames and passwords and a cap to their bandwidth.

what i have.

so i went ahead and bought the mikrotik rb3011UiAS-RM it had a class 5 licence and up to 200 concurrent users. when i got it i realized that it had no wifi …serious bummer as every video and article i find on the web seems to all have a router with some wifi interface attached as for if i can add one i cant seem to find a thing on that either.

so i had a standard home router linksys EA 3500 and i connected it up to the board and i have internet through it …but thats it it functions as it normally has and i cant find an article that says what to do if you dont have a mikrotik without a built in wlan.

so here’s what i want to do, don’t know if its possible but i hope you guys can help.

i have a 3011
a standard router
Ethernet cables
working internet (100mbps )

what i want a

to connect the linksys to the 3011 and get a working hotspot
with access control and bandwidth caps

Hotspot will do what you want or even a pppoe server. Set the linksys into ap mode and then run the hotspot/pppoe server on the interface you downlink to the linksys with. Should act just like a “normal” wireless interface.

will i be able to create user logins?? i’m pretty new and i feel like i’m asking the wrong questions when i google stuf, i should’ve also said i’ve never set up a hotspot before if u have a link to how to setup a hotspot that doesn’t require a wlan video or forum i’d really appreciate it.

That depends. One important thing to note is that UserManager is not supported on RB3011 (nor any other ARM-base RouterBOARD) yet.

is there any other way to get some form of access control until then?? what about radius??

Yes, you can use external RADIUS server- that should work just fine (and UserManager is in fact just yet another RADIUS server, running directly atop RouterOS and with management interface built-in). You should also be able to create some local user accounts.

There’s a whole bunch of documentation here, though you may find it a bit obscure at times.

thank you a million times guys!! it works now i can finally sleep lol i’ll try the radius server a bit later and see how it goes
