Discussion, please review my Wireless-Wired-Wireless setup

Dear Friends,

i would like to kindly ask you to review my garden house configuration and advice some workarounds to achieve better and stable result. Im just a beginner user of MikroTik devices, so the processes and setups i made are the results of searching and some knowledge… Therefore I’m sure, that there are some misconfigurations and errors. I hope I’ve choose a good way and place to discuss about it.

My first setup was a ZTE ADSL router (main router because of ADSL internet connection) and a cheap TP Link router configured as a WiFi repeater with two antennas in the “window”… With this config i was able to provide WiFi in all the edges of the house and also in the garden. It was cheap, good, but doesn’t cover the whole - rear part of the garden…

I would like to do it right (hopefully…). So my plan was to connect 3 devices, and do it like this PLAN :
First device ISP router provides internet, DHCP and WiFi;
Second device connects to the WiFi provided by the first device, acts as a repeater for WiFi to cover the whole house and “forwards” the internet to LAN connectors;
Third device is connected with second device via LAN cable and provides strong WiFi outdoor;

LAN DIAGRAM.jpg
CONFIGURATIONS :

1. MAIN : ZTE ADSL router (because of ADSL internet connection, the only way here…)
DHCP Server, 192.168.1.1
Providing WiFi under SSID XY

  1. SECOND inside : MikroTik RB951-2Hnd
  • steps of settings : QuickSet as CPE, connected via WiFi to SSID XY from ZTE and providing “Internet connection” on LAN ports)
  • DHCP Client on “bridge1”
  • IP Fixed on MAIN ZTE via MAC address to 192.168.1.2
  1. THIRD outside : MikroTik RBSXTsq2nD
  • steps of settings : enabling WiFi Interface, creating security profile with same SSID and password as in ZTE, creating bridge1 with “ethernet1” and “wlan1”
  • DHCP client on “ethernet1”
  • IP Fixed on MAIN ZTE via MAC address to 192.168.1.3

FAULTS, ERROS :

  • The SECOND device should regarding to my plan provide also WiFi network. Is not necessary, but the FIRST MAIN router needs to be sadly on very bad position, so it would be nice to extend the range. However this is not happening. Everything works, but the “catched” WiFi from FIRST router is only provided to LAN ports, neither also as a WiFi network. The “wlan” is with CPE Quickset configured as (i think) “pseudostation bridge”… Can i somehow do this ?

  • The SECOND device DHCP client is on “bridge1”. I think it should be on “wlan1” only, because thats the source of such information. However, when i try to change it, i received error like : client couldn’t be slave device, or so… Is this good so ?

  • The THIRD device WiFi distance was very short. I managed to setup the Gain and TX power to correct that. After doing that, the SECOND device IP changed to 192.168.1.6 (however it should be FIXED via MAC on MAIN DEVICEs DHCP to xx.1.2…). I don’t know, if the SECOND device somehow connected via WiFi to THIRD because of stronger signal or why is this happening. I managed to setup the CPE again on SECOND device and it receives again the xx.1.2 IP address. I need to check afternoon, is its still so. Why is this happening please, or how can i avoid this in the future ?

  • The internet connection is slower by default, the ISP max via ADSL is 30M. With cheap TP-Link router setup, i had cca 25M speed everywhere. In the whole house, outside..everywhere. With actual setup is cca 12MB the max speed i achieve outside. How is this possible please ?

I hope, i wrote everything clear and understandably. Excuse me for my English, its not my main language.

Thank you very much every comment and help provided to me !

Wish you a nice weekend,

Regards
Ronnie

First thing I would do is wire a jack on either side of the wall where your router is located.
I would then go any wifi from that point to try to repeat outside. Easy elimination of one wall and no mess. Keep the router wifi as strictly an indoor AP.

Not sure of the distance or line of sight options but this seems like a great way to transmit honking throughput for a short distance very effectively.

For outdoors they have this unit.

Sorry not very good with wifi stuff and repeating… I would never repeat… ever. (dual radios is the only way to re-transmit over wifi) I would go powerline or coax adapters before repeating.

anav, thank you very for your informations. To be honest, the devices i mentioned are alredy “here, bought” so i would like to make the connection with them. The WiFi repeater functionality is just an option, its not a must, so we could leave it. But otherways, there are for sure some troubles with setups. As first, i need to update the license to L4 for the outdoor THIRD device to act as an AP. I didnt know, that in bridge mode is only possible to connect 1client with L3 license. But anyways, the power, distance and design of this device absolutely meets my requests. In basics i just need to proper configure the SECOND device as a “WiFI to LAN bridge” device with IP receiving from WiFi side, and configure THIRD device as a “LAN to WiFi bridge” device with AP function for outdoor clients, with IP receiving from LAN side :-/

I would use powerline device and see if I could use an outdoor plug (with weather cover and attached to an outdoor radio)!!!

Some extreme cases…
