i am using mikrotik as parent web-proxy on this machine :
AMD Athlon X2 3800
2 GB DDR2 5300
160 GB WDC SATA2
Biostar TFORCE 7025 Motherboard
what i want to ask is, does mikrotik v3 already support this kinda hardware?
because when i compare about the web-proxy caching, those hardware cannot perform as well as my
Pentium 3 700, 512 SDRAM, 40 GB hdd (running V.2.9.50)..
it supposed to be those rig above has better performance than the Pentium 3..
As far as support, I don’t see why v3 would not run this. You would have to look at the chipset of the main board to verify the sata support though.
However, I think maybe you are asking the question that you believe you have a PIII that is outperforming v3 with your newer hardware, is this the case?
On x86 systems I would only use Intel chipsets, that is my 2cents. If you need more performance, wait for the 1000 series to come out. That should help out a lot. Else there is also other Enterprise Grade x86 MTs available that have been pre-tested and such.
I recommend this, that does not mean it won’t run on many other board etc. I think the Intel chipsets are going to be one of the least incompatible and provide more performance than some others. Just again, my 2 cents on that. However, I don’t see any reason why it would not run on your selected board etc. I would use a flash drive though for the OS, and then a HD for the rest.
I would stick only to AMD systems for 3 obvious reasons:
price per performance
upgrade ability - CPU socket AM2 AM2+ are fully compatible with each other
CPU integrated memory controller - I think thats the reason why AMD boards work better (are more powerful) than Intel boxes if we talk from RouterOS point of view
SPM is supported and we are working hard to iron out SMP problems
and dual channel is hardware feature, and does not need any special software, and yes RouterOS wil benefit from faster memory
