Does RouterOS fully support Windows Networking via VPN?

Hi,

I’m currently using M0n0Wall as my firewall/router, but it’s VPN options are not very robust so somone suggested I look at RouterOS.

I need to offer VPN access through our router so that mobile clients can connect to the network and have the same services as if they were physically attached to the internal LAN.

This means access to WINS resolution, print servers that use various broadcasting modes, windows file sharing, etc., etc…

The PPTP option in M0n0Wall doesn’t grant access to the Windows Network Neighborhood and has difficulty with connecting to some print servers. The IPSec feature in M0n0Wall would be good, except that it doesn’t support NAT Traversal so that is a no go.

Will RouterOS solve this problem for me? My mobile clients that need to VPN in will always be sitting behind NAT/Routers on ADSL.

I have worked with monowall, windows 2003, routerOS, linux, and other types vpn servers now. so far Iam completely impressed with the routerOS version. windows 2003 has holes, monowall does not have the options, and the linux server is just a pain in the butt.

there is some restriction to windows file shareing but that is inherint in vpn it self most of this is fixed with a wins server set

OK…so with RouterOS I should have better luck at accessing the windows LAN via PPTP connection than I do with M0n0Wall?

well you will need a wins server OR you will need to edit the lmhosts and the hosts file on the client of the vpn so that they can resolve windows domains names to their IP.
