Dude 3.4: Image Load Bug

There is an intermittent problem in Dude 3.4 (but I’ve noticed it in previous versions back to 3.0).

Sometimes an image will not display on a map. All places where the same image would appear just have nothing.

Example: image is loaded
images_loaded_ok.jpg
But exit the Dude client and start it again (after 5 times this happens):
images_not_loaded_ok.jpg
It is usually the first time that I start the Dude for the day that some images are missing. But can occur at any time.
When I look at the Appearance of the network element, I see Loading…
images_appearance_weirdness.jpg
The images that have problems seem to change after I make changes to the maps and load new images and delete old ones.
But if an image is bad, then it disappears for all the maps at once. It usually comes back after restarting the Dude client.

+1

try other image format, try different file name. open in for example “faststone image viewer” and save as JPG with name oneword.jpg

I converted all my png files to jpg and they new display.
This does mean that I lost all of the transparency information, but at least they display.
After altering the maps and devices to use the new images, I noticed another problem:
ntp_gone_bad.jpg
All of the images now work except for ntp.svg (the one that comes with Dude).

Also note that the title bar is not correct.

When I right-click on a device and choose Settings the settings box appears with a title bar that says “mydevice - Device”.
When I right-click on a device and choose Appearance the settings box appears with a title bar that has a shifted up copy of the Device label format string in it. I have verified this against submaps and links too - they contain the label format string for submaps and labels.

To fix the ntp.svg problem, I was bad and converted it to png as: “n t p.png”

I started a Dude client, uploaded “n t p.png”, and the went to change the appearance of my Time Server.
But I found that “ntp.svg” displayed perfectly, I selected “n t p.png” and it just said “Loading…”
I shut down Dude, and though to myself “what is happening”.

Then I started Dude client again, and looked at the Time Server.
It’s image was gone.
I selected “ntp.svg” and it said “Loading…” It worked 5 seconds ago…
Then I changed the image to “n t p.png” and it displayed perfectly. But 5 seconds ago it was broken…

I think there could be a problem in your windows, nobody else has complained about the default icons, or PNG files.

Sorry Normis I have to disagree, if you reload the dude multiple times you will eventually find something doesn’t show up. It could be any graphic including the ones that came with the dude. This is win2k3 sp2.

I just exit and reload and usually get every icon. The easiest way to reproduce this error is create a new map and place one object on it. Reload the dude until it doesn’t show up. I have found when I put a 2nd object with the same graphic it is much more reliable.

In V 3.5 I have the same issue…
However I noticed that when the icon is used at least 2 times, it loads fine. So only if it’s used 1 time it fails to load…
Hope this issue will be resolved someday.

Thanks for the kind welcomes…made my day! my grouchy old cat likes things her way..period…she is one of a kind (we all say that dont we?!) actually we are tied at the hip so even look a bit alike, being a bit portly…i had my last “tied at the hip” friend till he was 18 yrs. old…bluepoint siamese…jees i loved that cat..i still see him around and its been 20 yrs since he walked through the veil. i will see if i can get some pix on soon…of dogs too…got some awesome photos…just have to figure it out how to put them on…i am old but not stupid so who knows, maybe even today!!! had the dogs since they were wee little puppies, so they are still my babies…

this is an everyday issue, and that’s too how i solve it (restart the client multiple times until all the images render)

every now and then (everyother day almost) i have to restart the server as the client restart doesn’t quite do the trick

this is also with no extra images added (only default device icons) …this does start to happen when you add more devices until you spend the first hour or so of your day making sure they all render …

using dude 3.5
on windows xp 2003 (dedicated box for server)

I have stopped exiting the client, just disconnect and reconnect when a graphic doesn’t load… faster, works almost every time. I always use more than one of a graphic…

Still seeing the same problem in Dude 3.6 on Windows server 2003 SBS and in x86 RouterOS 4.10.

yes, but you have to try v4 instead

Tried v4. The ping service stops working on all devices.

have not seen such problem. send detailed information about your settings to support and include images of when ping doesn’t work anymore

I noticed (in Dude 3.6) that when you use a certain picture just once, you have a risk of it not showing. (I use only SVG’s, they scale nicer .) However, any image that is used two or more times will always show fine.

So, my workaround is: on the edge of my map I have ‘fake’ devices (set address to 0.0.0.0 and monitor nothing so the device stays grey) with all images that are essentially only used once somewhere else on the map. So these fake devices are the second instance of those images. I scale the images to a tiny size on these fake devices, so these fake devices do not get in the way.

Since I’ve done this, all my images have always shown just fine.

I haven’t’ yet moved to 4 beta, so I don’t know the situation there…

there will be no more v3 fixes, all fixed will go into v4, so reporting v3 bugs will not help.

reporting v3 bugs will not help

Agreed.
However, reporting workarounds for users not yet having had an opportunity to go to 4 beta is still seems helpful :sunglasses:

I am useing Dude 4.0 Beta 1 and I am having the same problem with client.svg. It has worked fine for over a month and yesterday is gives the same trouble as mentioned in this forum all I see is loading while trying to view in the device type. Any of the other default images show up just fine. The only thing that has changed is we added another client PC to monitor. I am confused on how the additional PC could affect the other 3 pc including the server when it is just a client.
