Just a heads up to anyone in Australia (and I supposed anywhere else) about hotspot systems.
I’m running 2 Eber 220 units from http://www.yawarra.com.au at a Uni we provide.
Just hit 100 users online concurrently with cpu at about 40-60%
Pretty amazing considering we apply radius queues to each user along with a rather large set of firewall rules.
The only problem I’ve ever even had with the devices not holding up was when we used the ‘port-scan’ which quickly maxed the cpu and crashed ![]()
If anyone’s interested in one of the devices we use.. they’re small, quite well priced, all passively cooled, rack mountable and well housed.

- 533 or 1000MHz processor
- 128 to 768MB RAM
- miniPCI slot
- 4 ethernet ports
- IDE interface (CF type I/II only)
- 2.5" and 3.5" IDE interface
- USB ports x2 (USB 1.1/2.0)
- Extra serial port
- Floppy drive interface
- VGA port
- SATA interface (Eber 230 only)
Just thought to put this up as an example of simple hardware still being great for use.
