Efficient Wireless Bridging

Hi all,

Please could you advise the most efficient method to layer 2 bridge a Wireless and Wired network using all Mikrotik equipment in terms of CPU, Radio time, max MTU etc?

From the wiki-

If L2 bridging over wireless link is not necessary - as in case of routed or MPLS switched network, basic mode=station setup is suggested and will provide highest efficiency.

So one might assume that ‘mode=station’ is the most efficient, however with the additional overheads of an MPLS or EoIP tunnel, is that still the case? or is station-bridge or station-wds more efficient?

You cannot bridge mode-station. If mikrotik to mikrotik wireless use mode=station-bridge to connect to mode=bridge or mode=Ap/bridge

Station-wds is not optimal in an 802.11n environment as it does not work well with packet aggregation ampdu etc which gives the higher speeds

You can’t, but you can bridge an EoIP tunnel layered over it.

I believe that using mikrotik native bridging modes is more efficient than running eoip over routed link. And much easier to manage.

If you are trying to bridge a network from one location to another location - the easiest method is to :

  • Make a WDS link. WDS links will pass vlans and MAC addresses
  • I would suggest using N only or AC only
  • I would suggest using NV2.

I have many wireless point to point WDS NV2 links that are able to pass a sustained 400 to 500 meg throughput load.

You can, true, but it is not as efficient as a simple bridge.

If you really wanted to layer a tunnel over that type of link vpls offers a 60% faster solution than eoip and full unfragmented Mtu of 1500 or better.
