Encrypt backhaul links?

I’ve got several backhauls using RB512’s and SR5 cards. I run Nstreme on all the links. Is everyone encrypting their backhauls if they are running nstreme? What are your suggestions for a good encryption scheme?

Eric

Are you running pppoe for the clients? If so don’t bother encrypting the bh - just more of a performance hit especially over nstreme than necessary. If you arent running pppoe… well, I sure hope your clients are utilizing strong encryption!

Yeah we are completely using PPPoE on everything. But very few people are running encrypted PPPoE. But even with PPPoE w/encryption; if I am running the RB512’s at the tower as the PPPoE conecentrator, wouldn’t it still be pretty unsecure on the backhaul?

you could vpn or otherwise tunnel between the wireless routers

What about running WPA on the PtP backhaul? I thought that I heard someone say that if your using Atheros cards; that wireless encryption has very little impact on the router. As opposed to IPSEC, etc that directly impact router CPU.
