EPON Support

Hi,

Is there a plan for mikrotik to support EPON?
If there is, What is the timeline?

Thanks,
TISHRI

PON & GPON & EPON into a Mikrotik router can be done.

I’ve tested & used some of the Mikrotik SFP GPON products - which is outside the scope of your question about EPON.

To implement an EPON connection to a Mikrotik (or any other device with a SFP interrace), you need to know the following:

  • There are two types of SFP PON devices.
    – Some devices have the controlling/management/firmware built into the CPE/router/switch and that devices software natively supports (dumb) PON SFP devices.
    – Some devices know nothing about a PON SFP device. With this class of device, you need a PON (EPON) device which contains a built-in controller/firmware to make a SFP PON device behave as if it were a regular normal SFP device. This type of EPON SFP should most likely work in almost every product that has an SFP iterface (such as a Mikrotik).

You just treat the EPON SFP module as if it was an ethernet interface connected to an ethernet HUB. Give the device interface the EPON is inserved into an IP address and you are up and running.

About the only real important suggestion I may strongly suggest is to research/verify/test the enviornmental conditions you will be placing the EPON module into - and actually pre-test/verify the EPON SFP device will operate and cycle through the tempratures you will be operating in. If EPON will be placed in an outdoor air-tight nema enclosure , then simulate/test under operational-full-heavy-load the maximum and minimum thermal enviornments you will be experiencing in real life during the hottest days of the summer and the coldest days of the winter.

What brand model part number product of EPON are you considering ?
