About the network: we are a small WISP, running Alvarion radios and Mikrotik on bridged/switched network. This has worked well for us, however about two weeks ago we started to receive complaints from customers all over our network that their network performance was slow. These complaints have escalated to where it’s pretty much a constant thing. After quite a bit of investigation, the following facts have become clear:
- There is a huge decrease in available bandwidth, and a huge increase in latency, across the PPPoE connections going through our RB1100. Ping times in excess of 900ms are commonly seen, where previously 3-5ms was more common. This slowness comes and goes, so its very hard to pin down.
- These adverse pings occur ONLY when pinging through the PPPoE link – i.e. the customer router. When pinging the customer’s radio, ping times are consistently excellent.
- Packet sniffing on the wireless backbone (which is bridged) reveals nothing of consequence.
- Isolating and removing segments of the wireless backbone reveals nothing of consequence (i.e. we unplugged everything and plugged in one section at a time. Nothing worked.)
- Replacing various switches, and even the router itself, have proven futile.
- It is very unlikely to be wireless interference, since the problem is affecting customers over a 25 mile radius.
Can anybody make any suggestions on resolving this issue? I’m frankly completely out of ideas.
Thanks!
