Factory reset - anyone else having trouble with it?

Hi all,

I’m loving my new Mikrotik RB750GL - lots of advanced features, good price, seems to work really well.

There’s only one small annoyance that’s driving me crazy. The factory reset seems almost impossible to activate without 4 hands. Not sure if all of them are the same, so I attached a picture.

The problem is the design. Since the pads are located slightly away from the hole between them, the conical shape of a Phillips-head screwdriver will not make contact with the inner edge of the pads - it hits the small bit of bare board around the hole - tried everything from my largest phillips head to some tiny jewelry screwdrivers. I’ve managed to do it with a flat/slotted/blade screwdriver, but because the blade has to be perfectly flat (perpendicular) against the board, and I have to pull the power cord out/in while holding it that way, it usually takes me a half hour to get it right.

I’d love it if MikroTik would change to the standard 2-up header they use on PC motherboards. Or even if they just put the pads/holes there (like the one in the picture), I’d be okay with soldering the jumper connector on, or just using a paper clip in the holes. Even if they tinned (soldered) the pads, there would at least be a rounded surface there so a blade screwdriver would not need to be held perfectly flat. In fact I think that’s what I’ll be doing to remedy my current board.

Other than this, I’m really happy with the router.

I wonder!!! why don’t you first try with reset button ?

That’s right. As you can read in the “Quick Guide” (see on RouterBOARD.com), the device has a reset button. Hold the button while turning the device on. When LED starts flashing, release button to reset.

I have, many times. But since every time I’ve tried it, it never cleared the configuration, I guess I assumed it was more of a “reboot” button. The only way I’ve ever been able to reset it to factory defaults is to do the three-handed process above.

Perhaps I’ve got a defective reset button then?

The reset button certainly can’t reboot the board. Please clarify step by step how you used it?

I do it this way:

  • turn off the device by unplugging the cable
  • hold the button with a pencil
  • plug in the power cord into the board (still holding the button)
  • wait until one of the LEDs starts to blink
  • release the button

Reset is complete.

Yep, that’s exactly the way I did it. Also tried releasing the button right after powering up, and holding the button down for a very long time. It doesn’t clear the configuration.

One curious thing: If I short the pads on the board together (with the unit powered), the ACT light comes on immediately. If I hit the Reset button (again with the unit on), the ACT light does not come on. Is this normal, or does it confirm a bad reset button?

Thanks for the help…
