Fault Question

EDIT Please note I have kind of figured this out myself. I started configuring one part of the switch at a time, then rebooting to try find which part of the config was causing the fault. I haven’t proven for sure but it the switch is working fine and the only part of the config I didn’t change was making port 1 a slave to port 2. I can now reboot and not have any issues. It would still be good if someone could explain this behaviour. I also updated to the latest firmware but didn’t test. Maybe someone could also confirm if this was possibly a bug which has been fixed. Thanks **

Hi all. I’ve just purchased my first Router OS product (not the first for my company), a CR5125 Cloud Switch, and I’m not sure if it’s me or I have a faulty unit.

We use router boards throughout our company for a number of different things, but I normally use Juniper switches. One of my collegues said to give these switches a go and I really just needed a managed 24 port switch. This one had wireless too so I thought why not.

My issue is everytime I go to reboot this thing it loads without a proper config, the ports seem disabled (when you plug a cable in I get no link level lights) and I have a bunch on squiggly lines on the LCD. I can get back into it by resetting, losing my config and trying again, but after this happening twice I can see I’m not going to win this battle easily.

Do I need to update the firmware? To be fair it’s down right now so I can’t tell you the version, but it’s brand new out of the box today.

Do I have a hardware fault? Maybe someone has seen this before?

The first time I shutdown the switch by issuing the shutdown command from WinBox, I then pulled out the power, put it back in and it booted as described. Then the second time I rebuilt my config, everything was working perfectly how i wanted it, then I chose reboot instead of shutdown and got the same result. No link level and the LCD screen is all messed up.

Here is all I’m doing with the config, maybe it’s user error…

  1. I choose not to delete the current config
  2. I make port 1 a slave to port 2 which is master by default
  3. I delete the DHCP server
  4. I change IP address to a 172.16.x.x/24 network address
  5. I set the SSID and wirless security settings
  6. I rename the admin user, set the password and add a second admin user.
  7. I create a config backup

At this point I test everything and it’s working exactly how i want it. I then reboot to make sure my configs holding and bam, a pretty brick.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
