Feature request for service interruption or announcement

Hi all,

I don't know if the thing I want is possible today. If it is, give me a short hint. If not it could be a nice feature.

The problem

If some leased line or ptp-links failed all the dsl customers in the special location are calling us (I can't go to the internet ...) The worst is that they calling us all the same time.

I wan't to redirect the customers html-request in case of unavailable service to an html page on the MT (here RB500) with the information that we know about the problem and that we are working on it.

Can this be done already by the proxy of MT?

I don’t think that’s possible with the MT proxy today.

You could do something like this, but you’ll need a separate machine (Windows or Linux) for that.
I wrote a little “dummy DNS server” some weeks ago to solve a similar problem of another forum user.

The idea was the following:
When you notice your uplink is down, redirect all DNS requests to a new DNS server (the little one I came up with). This does only one thing - it will answer all DNS name queries (for A records) with a fixed ip address you configure. Then just run a webserver on that ip address with a 404 error document telling your customers that you already know of the problem and work (damn hard) on it :wink:.
This webserver could of course run on the same machine as the “fake” DNS server.

Once your uplink is available again, just let your users use the real DNS servers again, and voila - you’re back. (My little fake DNS server always gives out a very short TTL - I think 10 seconds or so - not to poison the clients’ DNS cache with the fake entries…).

The only bad thing is the need for a second machine. This means 25 additinal machines (cost) and energie and thermal problems.

Is it possible to add an event in MT to send any information directly to the client machine even when the uplink goes down . It is very necessary for the support and billing to inform users about any important notice .

Hope our MT Development team will think about it.

Web-proxy test has one feature that is similar to Christian setup, as you will need web-server on your network, that will be able to show appropriate web-page (as RouterOS page is not editable).
‘ip proxy access’ has matcher ‘redirect-to’, it means you can create script that will redirect all requests to proxy to the web-page running the information about ‘we are working on your issue’, when problem with upstream link occurs.
Alternative configuration that might be possible without additional web-server, when you are using HotSpot. I think it should be possible to create two login pages (one for normal HotSpot operating, another folder for the problematic situations), using scipts you can change ‘html-directory’ for the ‘ip hotspot profile’, and appropriate login page will provide information about current issues and that ‘you are working on it’.

That is possible if there is no other way . But require time to change the different message like Greetings , reminder and require time to forward the traffic for a particular user or a group of users. And on top of everything the system should be something like Sending announcement without the service interruption.

That is why MT OS Router Like MT should have it’s own terminal to send custom announcment to the user level as long as it is having other releted stong features like HOTSPOT . usermanager , userstatus , billing , accounting etc..


MT will be a complete router OS if this feature can be added . So Looking forward for the comment from the MT development team

I’m using 6 MT OS with licence level 6 for my six localtion and one of those are using as an accesspoint for my Wireless Links . I have never found anything like MT OS which can be handles so quickly and efficiently

I am verymuch satisfied with the system . Now the point is i was in a need to send customised messages to my clients on verious purpose specially the payment reminder , virus detection worning , informing maintanance schedule and special greetings just to keep in touch with some special clients.

So then while I started searchig something like the way i wanted , then i found a software developed by INDIA and the name is 24 ONline. http://www.24onlinebilling.com/DemoV7120/index.html and got jelous by seeing their 2 features . 1 is system management>Client service> message management 2. live usr>sending mesage and intregreted mail server including customizable login page. I just felt like evrything is possible to intregret wit OUR MT OS and hope it whould not be a hard job to impliment java based message popup system . I feel Like If Our MT deelopment team
just give it a closer look then they might as well think to include this feature with in the next 2 or three release .

Am I having a High Hope with it ? :unamused:
