Feature request

I know there is a similar request on the the forum somewhere, but it is 10 years old, and I was wondering if in the new Internet Of Things fever context, Mikrotik will do some magic, once more, and solve the serial-terminal scripting.It will be great to easily send and receive text over the serial port, adding by this a lot of functionality (at least in my opinion).

Yes, agreed serial (rs232) scripting would be an excellent feature.

Given there are other similar features SMS, GPS which basically send and receive data over a serial port… To enable a new user defined similar feature (called “rs232” say) which allows the user to define the sent (eg AT+XXX etc) code and receive the response to a text string should be relatively simple to add. This would be the icing on the cake for me.

Any feedback, guys ? Normis, do you think this can/will be done, at some point ?

I’m pretty sure RouterOS already supports RS232 console. It uses Telnet over that, so as long as the remote end has a serial Telnet client, you can send and receive commands over that.

It would be nice if one could also alter that console to use a different higher level protocol (say, API), but that’s another thing.

I think it is not very clear what you want to do…
Also, keep in mind this is a router. When you want to build an intelligent device, I recommend you to buy
a Raspberry Pi or similar small computer. Then you can control lots of things, including using serial ports.

Both the muscles and the brain are there for a decent two way comm over the serial port, altough is not available yet. It is not important what I want to do, but what opportuinities this might open. For the sake of an example, lets say I want to spend 10 Euro on eBay and buy an Arduino Nano clone, two relays, an ir transmitter, a temperature and humidity sensor, a light sensor (yes, all for that money) and make the room, that hosts my Mikrotik router, smarter. I’ll be able to cool, heat, dehumidify, based on forecast, using the AC;I would be able to start my generator and even let someone in the room unlocking a magnetic lock, whenever I think is necessary. You think that is cool for 10 Euros ? Just wait and see what people will come up with !

@Mikrotik: Yes/No/Maybe ? … any answer should do !
