I recently bought an RB600A. I got it because the hardware is exactly what I was looking for - it has gigabit, PoE, plenty of CF and mini PCI, and it doesn’t draw much power. I usually use OpenBSD for routers and servers, so I was concerned that I might not like something simpler like RouterOS, especially since MikroTik doesn’t make it easy to install Linux or get their kernel patch.
My fears were unfounded; RouterOS is great. But there are a few things that would make me like it even more:
- Full ECN support. The newest versions of Windows, OS X, and Linux all support it. ECN would make queueing work better with these systems.
- Blue support. Blue is a queueing discipline in altq, a popular Linux & BSD packet queuer. I’ve heard it’s one of the highest-performance qdisc’s available.
- Proofread your manual. It’s a far better manual than most products have, but there are a few spelling and grammar errors. For example: “experimantally”.
- An IRC proxy. I’d like it to maintain connections to the IRC server even when the client disconnects, and to allow multiple internal connections to the same proxied connection. An option to log to a CF card would be nice.
Thanks for making such nice hardware and software. Dievs, svētī Latviju!
