Hello Guys,
Wondering if any of you can make a recommendation or confirm what I’m thinking.
In a nutshell I’m trying to build a 1+ mile LOS (true line of site) portable video camera distribution system. On one end will be 1 to 4 IP cameras. On the other side will be tablets, Android/iPhone and notebooks that will be able to view the IP cameras.
The whole system will be highly portable and light weight, think backpack or briefcase solution. Ideally everything will work with 12volt DC battery packs. Base of antennas will be placed at about 1 foot above ground (low profile).
I was about to order either 2 Ubiquiti Bullet M2 or 2 Rocket M devices and use these with 9db “rubber duck” antennas such as the TPLinks. I then came across the Mikrotik devices and I’m thinking I might get more bang for the buck using one of these device pairs. I first came across the Groove 52HPn which peeked my interest because unlike the Ubiquiti could be set to use either 2.4 or 5.8 Ghz. I then discovered the “Metal” series and have been looking at the Metal 52 ac which has more power and gigabit ethernet connection.
Putting aside the cost differences of the Groove/Metals is there any reason why I should not use the Metal 52 ac devices over any other Mikrotik or Ubiquiti products?
I know the Rocket M supports MIMO but didn’t see any mention of this on the Metal 52 ac. Anyone have any opinion on how important this will be?
I know power output is only one variable in range but the Metal 52 ac with 1300 mW seems like it would be of help with range if I wanted to push this system out to 2 miles (with directional antenna upgrades). Most of the time this system will be used at about 600 meters.
Lastly are there any known problems with the Metal 52 ac deivces I should be aware of? I know the “Metals” have had problems in the past (reading the forums).
Thanks,
Carlo
PS I have no brand loyalty. I work occasionally with both physical and virtual routers and firewalls etc so I’m not worried about setup or configuration issues to much.
