I have two RB2011 separated by a distance of around 1 Km. Now I’m planning to implement fiber optic connectivity between two points. I am new to the fiber world. I know that I need S-3553LC20D SFP module (T1310nm/R1550nm).
Now my question is what type of Fiber optic cable do I need to buy for this purpose and what are the other accessories necessary for this job.
These particular modules would use single mode fibre but the exact type including jacket etc. really depends on the installation environment both in terms of the protection required after installation and the options/requirements for the installation itself. e.g. the specs for an overhead or underground cable are usually different.
Not particularly true.
There is multimode and singlemode fiber.
Depending on length, decide which one to use.
In case of spanning around 1 km, singlemode would be the choice.
Also pick the right modules, designed for singlemode.
For 1km distance and for 1Gb/s you have to use singlemode fiber - SMF (9/125µm, OS1, G.652 and G.657 are names and standard connected with SMF).
There are indoor, ourdoor and universal cales with different types of coating, cladding, tensile strenght etc. Normaly you can buy cables with 2 to 96 optical fibers. Standard installation use cables with 12 or more fibers, price difference between cable with 2 and 12 is not too big.
If you want to do all the work yourself and don´t have any experience with optical fiber splicing etc., I would recommend you to buy optical cable with already fitted/welded pigtails, for example with LC connectors.
Usually, cable with connector is places inside spliceboxs or other type of box for fiber optic connectors.
You can use SFP module S-3553LC20D over one SMF strand or S-31DLC20D over two SMF strands.
But, if you are not familiar with fiber optic at all, I would recommend you to contact specialized company to do the job for you. Working with fiber optic is not as easy as UTP crimping.
