I’m not sure why my last post was deleted. I’ll try to be clear and concise this time around.

I require assistance with Flashfig. I have followed the wiki tutorial, but I am unable to flash a new default-configuration onto my RB951G. These will be deployed on a customer prem, and we consistently have issues with skilled customers hitting the ‘factory-reset’.

I have tried setting up my windows machine on the same LAN (ether2-5) on the Router, as well as send it the

/system routerboard settings set boot-device=flash-boot

, to enable flashfig on the Routerboard.

I have been unsuccessful on flashing it through either the LAN ports (ether2-5) or from ether1 (WAN).

I have set my laptops’ LAN address to (192.168.0.1) and the Client Boot Address to (192.168.0.2), as well as tried numerous other things to get the device to boot from flashfig without any result.

I have identified my RSC, made sure it was Selected and Activated, but I do not progress past this point:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OS: ROS -5-.2-5- (6.25)
Model: RB951G-2Hnd
Flashfig: Tried both the latest version [6.25], 5.25b and 5.25 with the same results.
Ports used: Attempted to use WAN (with POE), Ether2, Ether3, Ether4 and Ether5.

We require POE to power these units, I suspect that this is NOT a problem.

Flashfig is not the utility I was looking for. The solution is netinstall (Which I needed to download to get access to flashfig)…

/system routerboard settings set enable-jumper-reset=no

Does work, I ran into numerous posts stating that it does not work… It does, AS LONG AS THE DEFAULT CONFIGURATION has it set. I presume the routerboot (bootloader/bios?) is what is responsible for disabling the reset functionality.

This should be documented everywhere.

For those who want to know how to use flashfig, see below:

Powering a device through the use of POE does not work. It does not work using a power injector (Mikrotik power injector, or UBNT power injector)

The port that you must be plugged into is Ether1 (WAN), the device must be powered using the power adapter. Even though the Wiki states “LAN” it should only be taken as a network configuration step.

Flashfig must be running and the ethernet cable must be connected before powering on the device.

RSC configuration file must be saved as DOS compatible. If it is not it will fail to load likely due to carriage return. Windows users: Just save the configuration in notepad.

Flashfig uses some type of communication protocol does not appear to be supported using any type of switch [Cisco Catalyst 3750, 3550, Ubiquiti ToughSwitch] (I have not tried a hub yet). Trying to use a switch in between each device does not appear to work. Even though the wiki states that “Note, any RouterBOARD will be flashfiged within the network”. (I tried a switch because Fortigate devices need the interface to be up when it boots into recovery mode to be able to re-flash the configuration or firmware onto it)

Long story short:

  • If you have used the device before, issue the command as mentioned in the above post via LAN port (ether2-5) (substitute the flash-boot for f_lash-boot-once-then-nand_)
  • Plug ensure that flashfig is configured, selected, and activated.
  • Ensure the rsc file is plain-text dos-friendly file.
  • Ensure that the cable from the PC is plugged into Ether1 (WAN).
  • Only power the device using the supplied AC power adapter.

Upon successful flash, you will hear the 5 beat beep.
