there is no way to recover a password, you can reinstall the device to reset it, along with the other config.

Is this on an x86 system or on a Routerboard?

With x86 you can google for what people have done in the past.

With a Routerboard, you’ll have to dump the flash memory first which requires some specialized equipment, datasheets, and someone with a heavy electronics or preferably an EE or computer engineering degree.

If you can remember some specifics about the password such as if it was a word or a word with capitols, etc you can get a dictionary list, filter it by length, run mutators for things like alpha-numeric and special characters and then run a dictionary/brute force attack on the admin account though ssh. The more you can remember about the password the less time it will take. If it’s not your system it’s very noisy and it will fill the logs with your IP.

There’s always a way, it’s just a question of how much effort and resources you’re willing to put into it.

If you can provide proof of ownership, create a document that covers permission to conduct SSH security tests on it’s IP address, and provide as much information as you can about what the password might be I can create a list an run the test. I do penetration testing in my job from time to time so it’s not difficult to do. You just need to provide satisfactory documentation and proof of authority to grant permission to test. I can’t promise it’ll be successful, or that I can say 100% that it may not affect the router but I’ll take precautions to minimize the impact. There are a lot of factors to consider though.

If you have a backup file, there is always http://mikrotikpasswordrecovery.com/, though I would HIGHLY suggest changing your password after using it (they seem like good guys, but you can never be too safe).

I have used this in a pinch to recover a 532 password, but it’s somewhat complicated, your mileage may vary, it probably voids a warranty somewhere, can potentially corrupt the image on the board and a hundred other reasons Mikrotik can’t officially suggest it: http://manio.skyboo.net/mikrotik/

I have never tried either of these products with anything past the 3.x firmware’s, Mikrotik very well could have changed something that broke them. Good Luck.
