Frequent PPPoE terminations

Hi,
I have a broadband connection that connects with PPPoE. The connection works most of the time, but will sometimes terminate, disconnect, initialise and reconnect in a loop for a short period.
I am using a RB750Gr3 with RouterOS v6.37.3.

I’m having this same exact issue, where the log just fills with those errors. I believe the issue is on the service provider’s end, (in your case, where ever you are trying to log into). Check the connectivity on the other end of the pppoe connection to see if that is occasionally losing internet connectivity.

Having same issue as well. Can someone please confirm if issue was resolved by ISP? I have raised this with my ISP and my issue is currently under investigation. It would be great if someone can please confirm.

This topic was the 1st result so posting here.

In the same boat with my RB1100AHx4 Dude using PPPoE.
Randomly, after a clean reboot or firmware upgrade, the PPPoE connection will loop forever.
The only fix is to reboot again or disable/enable the interface connecting to the GPON.
I have never experienced such problems with any prior routers in this location. Plenty Asus routers and X86 PFSense/IPFire machines.
I let it for 10 minutes last time it happened. No luck.
I had to disable ether1 and enable it back. Instant PPPoE connection.

Send supout to support@mikrotik.com, this is a bug they might don’t have any to support output.

I had the same issues last night for a period of time. My guess was my provider. By I seeing many people here having the same isuues. My curiosity filled.

Also using pppoe to connect to isp. Also have dropouts. BUT they occur when I saturate uplink with uploads, keepalive in isp router keep timeouting and it auto disconnects. Do rest of you have traffic when it occurs (upload especially) or link is idle and it still happens?

I only see it after a reboot/firmware update.
It is also very random. One reboot it could work, the next one might not.
Thus, I wrote a small script to disable the physical port (ether1 in my case) when the pppoe client has the status “disconnected” and enable it back after several seconds.
It fixes the problem for me, but it is an ugly hack.
Sent the supout, but considering this problem is from at least 2010, slim chances that MIkrotik will ever fix it.

@NickM - you should try debug ppp/pppoe to see reason for disconnects. Also packet capture from your WAN interface could help.

Only logging and packet sniffing can help here. Until someone does that, and proves that way that it is a Mikrotik bug by showing that either PPPoE frames are not actually leaving the device although the log says they do or that correctly populated frames from the ISP’s PPPoE server are received but do not lead to successful connection establishment, and sends a supout.rif file to support@mikrotik.com, there will be no solution to the issue. Bothering support without the evidence as above is pointless as there are things which may happen in the wild but the fantasy of the developers is insufficient to anticipate them, so they need to learn what actually happens to be able to improve the software to handle it.

When I disable and enable PPPoE Client, or reboot the RB, the connection is done at first try. But when I disable and enable the PPPoE Client ethernet interface or restart the GPON, it keeps trying to connect about 30-70 times util get success and stop cycling.

Your log shows that the connection establishment has succeeded, and almost immediately after the PPPoE server asked your client to terminate it. Without seeing the sniff, I can only guess that your Mikrotik kept sending from the previously assigned IP address, and that was the reason why the server has requested to terminate the session.

What do you use in your /ip firewall nat rules, action=src-nat or action=masquerade?

You need to sniff into a file, or maybe better stream to the PC unless you can connect a large enough USB drive, the traffic on the physical interface to which the PPPoE client one is attached. Start sniffing while the working PPPoE session still exists, then reboot the GPON box, and then stop the sniff when the PPPoE server sends the LCP TermReq.

But my theory about sending packets with incorrect address only makes sense if you don’t have a fixed IP on the PPPoE, or if you have some other default route which gets used while the PPPoE WAN is down.

I had a similar issue, it started happening after I got a different WAN IP from the provider on the PPP session. The Mikrotik must have got in a bad state thinking it should have the old IP. A reboot sorted the issue. Note this Mikrotik was running some old firmware too, that probably didn’t help, I’ll get that updated.
