What are general good wisp settings that you have found to be effective?
Is it a good idea as a wisp to using ip packing? And if so with packing or without?
dns cache? good or bad idea? like does it use alot of resources that make it impractical for wisp? or does it help keep actual traffic down so should be generally used?
Do we need to configure anything for OSPF?
We just got our first AP up today and seeing good performance on our clients with the new Mikrotik setup but their is so many other features that we are not even sure where to begin for good practice settings in the routeros yet.
Well, I can write my expirience for first two questions.
I didn’t find ip packing useful for AP’s. If you enable packing 1500 you will see that users with bad links will have problems surfing etc.
So, my advice is not to use it.
We are using dns cache and it’s not using a lot of resources.
It is actually good if you dont have dhcp and you give users manual settings of ip, gateway and dns.
You can give them you AP router as primary dns server address and in case that some of the real dns servers is down you will change it inside your AP so users will not even know which real dns server they are using.
Hm, I am not sure did I explain this properly?
You will save few ms for resolving hosts
TIP: If you need to do dedicated links for AP’s , avoid bridging - use routing…
