I came from the environment using routers and firewalls from Cisco, Juniper and Checkpoint. Recently I had bought a unit of RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN & CRS125-24G-1S-RM for testing purposes.
Read through the wiki and google, and I started to get real confuse with the term “Layer 3 switch”, essentially both model above run the same RouterOS, and most examples illustrated the switching by setting a multiple port (in a switch chip) bind to a master port, then multiple VLAN to the individual port then individual IP to the VLAN and finally the route table.
Hope some can help me to answer the following:
-
In cisco, I had been doing IP Route by manually assigned a IP to a port, then define the route accordingly and it would route just fine, is the same applicable for RouterOS?
-
Does this “Layer 3 Switching” in RouterOS has to work with the VLAN?
-
Understand that there are 2 switching chip in RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN, will this switch chip help in terms of IP Route?
Thanks in advance for helping.
