Hi my name is Leon.
I recently got lucky and bagged myself a job working for a small wisp.
I was job searching for 5 whole years, so this was a opportunity,
I admit my networking knowledge is limited but I yearn to learn more.
As I have no idea whats is fully going on.
After a few days my boss handed me a RB500 preloaded with a licensed version of RouterOS 3.30
So after my boss left me to try figure it out I managed to find the Mikrotik site,
I downloaded winbox and powered the rb500 and setup my pc with a static IP.
After Reseting the board using the screw driver method, i managed to logon to it with winbox.
This is where things got tricky.
After some time I managed to get my RB500 to function as a 3 port switch.
By setting up a bridge in STP protocol rstp “i have no idea what that means…”
and adding the ports.
I then attached my pc that contains all my shared files to ether3, my pc on ether2.
ether 1 is attached to a 10 port hub that shares data from ether3 and ether2.
I’m trying to figure out how to limit each connection on ether1 to 7Mbps.
Meaning that each person connected to a port on the 10 port switch
However ether 2 and ether3 must still get priority.
I’m not asking for someone to do my work.
i’m just asking for a shove in the right direction.
I truly have no idea what and can do..
since a few attempts have made me crash the device a few times.
So far I have basically been making cables, and building pc’s but my boss suggested I learn to properly use Mikrotik.
Thanks for the fast reply.
The wisp runs separately, I’m using the RB500 for my home windows network to try manage who gets what on the network over lan.
I am not currently sharing any internet on the network yet.
After looking around a bit I wondering how would I safely back up and update my device?
Also what versions will work best with my RB500?
I also found a R52n wifi module how do i install the driver? where is the driver?
I have no idea what version would work best but I would suggest using as new as it will accept.
If it is for only your home network I would recommend just updating and see how you go, you will retain your configuration but even if you don’t or you lose it for some other reasob- It wont hurt you to reconfigure it all again, nice experience
Thanks! that worked.
Now I noticed a note on the next update.
Before upgrading RouterBOARD 1xx or 5xx series devices (MIPS-LE) to version >=5.17, please upgrade your RouterBOOT firmware by uploading one of the following files to your corresponding device, and issuing command “/system routerboard upgrade”. Download for: [RB1xx]; [RB5xx]
So is this Firmware update to be copied the same way?
:edit
Never mind.. i found what i’m looking for.
Seems the only way is rs232.
