gigabit intel nic will not associate at gigabit

No matter what I do this gigabit intel nic(pro1000mt) will not associate at 1000 in 2.8.28 on one computer specifically for me. In any other computer it works just find. Anyone have this problem before, any solutions?

Remember to use at least CAT5e cables (standard CAT5 might give problems) and make sure all 8 wires are properly connected, as gigabit uses all 8 (vs. 10mbps or 100mbps which uses only 4 wires).

short of that, I THINK that the mainboard must support at least PCI2.2 to get full gigabit speeds. Not sure about this though.

i found the problem, their was an almost microscopic piece of something in the jack of the nic. i thought gigabit used all 4 pair, since it uses all 4 pair, is there different wiring standards other than 568a/b for it, or do those work equally well? also i guess there wont be any poe for gigabit.

I’ve personally never seen PoE on gigabit, but never say never.

gigabit uses exactly the same wiring as 10/100, and exactly the same connectors, termination, etc. The only difference is the quality.

Ideally gigabit should run over CAT6, which has much stricter installation tolerances than CAT5/e, however I have succesfully used gigabit on homegrown non-critical CAT5e networks with no significant problems.

Gigabit can use the same wiring at 10/100 if its wired per the EIA/TIA standards. 10/100 only required 2 pairs whereas gigiabit requires all 4 pairs - so it is not exactly the same.

That’s correct, my bad. I assumed everyone wires CAT5 to EIA/TIA standards nowadays.
