Gigabit NAT, home-use, router recommendation

Hi,

Currently I have RB450G, and I really like RouterOS. I’m looking to upgrade my internet connection to a Gigabit one, and I think that I’ll need a new router also.

Any suggestions for a Gigabit NAT/RouterOS capable router?


LE: Forgot to mention, the connection type is PPPOE.

Until I read “PPPoE” I wanted to advise on using an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite. But the EdgeRouter Lite does not have PPPoE hardware accelerated. 1 Gbit/s of PPPoE is a LOT.. What about buying a modern Intel Atom / Pentium J based board and install the x86 version of RouterOS on it?
Maybe the CCR handles this kind of traffic just fine, but I have no experience with that.

I also don’t know about the status of PPPoE on consumer routers (Netgear e.a.). Maybe theze DO have good hardware acceleration for PPPoE.

1)I was thinking about an Atom board, but the whole thing gets complicated, needs more aditional stuff to buy,eats more space, pricey, and also more power hungry.

2)That CCR should do the job just fine, but it’s also pretty expensive.

3)Consumer-grade routers that handle gigabit pppoe already exist, and they’re cheap at ~100$.
For example TP-Link TL-WDR3600.

The problem is that I’ll miss RouterOS.

When I posted the topic, I was hoping that I could do something to save my RB450G from being replaced. I guess that there’s nothing left to do.


LE: One more thing, only the WAN interface uses PPPOE. This is the type of connection that the provider offers. Behind the router it will be only NAT+DHCP, and a small number of physical computers(less than 5).

depending on how much traffic you can actually get from the provider, and how much other services can provide over the internet, you could look into RB2011. Also, there is a possibility of use of PPC heavyweights that could give you desired throughput (RB1100AH, RB1100Hx2).

MikroTik RB493G = more Ports, more power and more wireless capabilities
MikroTik RB800 = if not many ports are needed but power is a really wish
MikroTik RB2011 = really powerful and high port density + wireless capabilities
MikroTik RB1200 = much more power but silent (fan less)
MikroTik RB1100AHx2 = many GB LAN ports, much power, strong vpn capabilities (IPSec)

CCR-1009 will be in my eyes the super thing for the future at home.

It probably does. All those routers do NAT in hardware. I tested a Dlink DIR-868L a few months ago.. 1Gbit/s NAT was no problem.

Isnt hardware NAT just a marketing term for fast path ?

Looking at that it would seem that NAT doesn’t work via fast path… But not sure.

RB493G has the same CPU as RB450G … RB2011 is about 30% more powerfull than RB450G … RB800, RB1200, RB1100AHx2 could be considered as a proper upgrade to RB450G …

Was in the same situation, decided to with a HP Microserver Gen8 that I plan to upgrade later for storage as well (under ESXi).

Torrents cap out at ~700 mbps with ~80% cpu load.

Btw, a dual core atom handles ~450 mbps max over pppoe so you’d need something a bit stronger.

I’d use it just to unpack/pack pppoe frames and NAT everything to another router …
So far, yes .. I’ve seen routers that can do stock gigabit over pppoe, the problem being that their hardware nat implementation is rubbish and people from openwrt won’t have that into their firmware BUT I LIKE OPENWRT !!! :neutral_face:
Anyhow, I’m a home user. Yes, my provider gives gigabit PPPoE. I know I won’t reach always reach gigabit since I’m dependent on the upload speeds of the peers where I’m downloading from BUT my providers is very big. And it has a great national peering. Alot of us mainly only do local/national traffic so we tend to reach the gigabit limit, the only problem I have right now is that I can’t get that with any openwrt on my tp-link wdr3600 OR on my netgear wndr3700 ( I can barely wait for the linksys wdr1900ac ). I also got an atom d525 box which doesn’t seem to be able to handle the gigPPPoE properly… buying something bigger isn’t really an option since I don’t need something bigger ( it would do its job just fine if it weren’t for this pesky ppppoe ). Buying a CCR is expensive, bulky and alot of unneeded ports ( sfp’s and stuff ).
If I could get something ~ < 150$ that would be as small as the rb750 with just 2 ports one wan, one lan ( 1:1 nat ) .. that’d be great !

The RB850Gx2 is announced for $ 129,00 and comes with the same form factor
as the RB450G and it fits also in the same case for something around $ 20,00
so this is in total then $ 149,00 what could now the problem?

You have more then one choice like I am seeing it right!
RB450G will be narrow down in price because the replacement will
be available then, but on this Router you will be able to install natively
also OpenWRT!!! Also likes the RB435G or RB493G will be able to run OpenWRT
natively and based on the addon cards you will have more options then like
RouterOS is offering you!

  • Soekris vpn1411 miniPCI card for more VPN throughput
  • Lannic 100A miniPCI card for faster DPI
  • and WLAN cards like you want to insert is also able to do.

I just hope it’ll manage to do the gigabit pppoe without too many headaches.

Plain SPI & NAT would not be the problem if this is for home usage, as I see it right
but if you now turning on all options and functions RouterOS is offering you, you would be
never happy with a smaller router, then perhaps it would be great to save the money until
you are able to buy a router such as a RB800 or RB1200 then you would be more happy
with all those things.

This is owed to the circumstances that you are turning on many
different options and this is narrow down the performance of each other router also!
What you thing I really turn on many options on a DD-WRT or OpenWRT router
likes VLANs & ACLs, QoS, DPI, SPI&NAT, Firewall rules, queues and so on,
this is also narrowing down the performance of each other router!
