Hi all
New to the forum and Mikrotik boads in general. Started working for a WISP a few months ago, so pretty new to Mikrotik router boards, know my way around mainstream home DSL routers etc. (eg: Netgear, Dlink etc etc.)
But obviously this is a whole other ballgame and really intrigued and interested to learn more.
I need some help. I am interested in getting one of these Mikrotik AP’s
http://routerboard.com/RB941-2nD
With the purpose of running a VPN (considering using OpenVPN rather than PPTP, L2TP/IPSec since from what i have read it is a better and more secure method.)
But not knowing too much, I guess fair to say… I am not too sure what would work the best.. ![]()
Ok so my current setup is as follows:
TP-link WI-FI DSL Router (TP-Link 8950ND)
http://www.tp-link.co.za/products/details/?model=TD-W8950ND
Some Port forwarding for services i use. (VNC/ RDP, few others.)
NO-IP DNS service.
Some IP address reservations for devices on the network.
So what i basically want to do is , have the ADSL router only be used as dialer, disable wi fi (since the above AP will handle all wireless as well) and all traffic then gets handled and routed via Mikrotik board.
As well as having setup the VPN connection to encrypt my connection and data. (via openVPN or whatever means)
I was thinking of going with " Private Internet access" as my VPN provider.
So I just want to know if it is possible via this above method and with that particular Mikrotik AP Routerboard, or maybe there is some another model ?
Also not too sure how the Mikrotik OS Licences work.
I see this particular one has RouterOS L4 , will this be sufficient for what i intend to do ?
If not can one upgrade ? what are the costs involved… or is it better to get one that comes bundled with the level OS needed?
The other alternative would be to get a DD-WRT compatible router and then just do everything via that.
If anyone can provide with some links to guides, or some advice what would be the best way going about this project.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for reading and in advance.
Peace
