hap ac3 reboots with kernel failure

Hi!

I got a HAPac3 which stayed unused for more than a year, but it was working OK on ROS 6.x.
I got it out from my cupboard a few weeks ago and netinstalled it with ROS 7.9. No config on it, apart from a management IP on a port.
It rebooted itself every 3-5mins with a message about kernel failure in the logs.
Then I did an update to 7.10.2, and now to 7.11. (I also did a RouterBOOT upgrade each time)

The issue remains the same. There are no bad blocks in the flash, and it has plenty of free space.

Any ideas what I should check? Any known issues?

I didn´t find any in the forums, but maybe someone has anything.

Otherwise I will probably have to throw this nice device out, two years of guarantee have passed. :frowning:((

Thanks!

Last 2 times I saw this being mentioned it was a defective power supply.
Can you check it is the correct one (sufficient power) and it still functions ok ?

thanks! The power supply is the correct one, that´s sure. But I will check the output or I might find another similar one& report back, if that helped. (I wish it will!)

Alternative: use POE input from another device capable of providing passive POE.
If it works you can then rule out issues related to board/config/version.

will do! thanks!

Failing power supplies may test bad without load, but they’ve got to be pretty bad off. If a “dry” test passes, test under load. Ideally, the same load, by way of the DC input jack contacts inside the router in question.

Thanks Tangent, good idea! I will load the PS for testing. I had in fact already had a bad PSU from MT, which gave the correct voltage w/o the load, but voltage dropped dramatically when loaded.

The MT supplied PSUs seem to be quite good, though. (The one having this issue has probably received some voltage peak in a thunderstorm.)

Hi! Unfortunately doesn´t seem like a PSU Problem. HAPac3 has shown the same issue with a different PSU. :frowning:
I will try with the PoE as soon as I get my hands on a PoE adapter or PoE capable device.

We had an issue with hAPAC3 doing the same sometime after 7.7. It doesn’t happen often but kernel failure in the logs. Upgraded to 7.10.2 and hasn’t happened yet, but no idea if resolved as it was rare but never happened before. Not much useful info but a data point.

Thanks anyway RyanNet! My HAPac3 was tested with 7.9,7.10.2,7.11, but still not throwing it away yet…

Other suggestions:

  • Is routerboard firmware also upgraded (I am not sure if netinstall does it and I assume it does but can not hurt to check).
  • In the couple of minutes it is active, can you do reset to clean config ?
  • Netinstall again to latest ROS6 to see what it does then ? If it shows the same behavior, it is not related to ROS version.

Thanks holvoetn, I have upgraded the firmware every time & I have already done a full reset with no default config-
I will do 2 more things:
-try running the device on PoE and on the current ROS7
-a netinstall to ros 6 again

Then I get my multimeter and soldering iron…

If still no success, only then I will throw it away.

Too bad, that there is no service manual available for these devices for the laypersons. :frowning:
Of course no vendor relase those anymore.
