hAP ax lite

Both connections from RB5009 and AX lite towards isp modem were 1gbps.
Didn’t do a test over that path without any vpn/encryption but pretty sure it would behave as a 1gbps connection as a normal Lan would.

On that latest test, I assume the IPSEC HW offloading is the bottle neck since CPU wasn’t maxing out on any of the cores.

What key size and encryption fit for HW offload?

UP. Got 25 Mbit with AES256-CBC (SHA256) (HW offload) and 60 Mbit with chacha20 (software encryption)

UP2. What about CPU auto speed? Now clocked at 800 MHz all time, not so good for small road warrior on power bank

asking again: is there a plan to launch hap ax lite in classic case? I don’t dare to buy this weird upright/tower device. I do already have a hap lite classic and I’d like to upgrade.

It sounds like this is not actually an USB-C port then and you should make that clear on the product page. All USB PD adapters can provide power to USB-C ports.

Actually it IS a USB-C port, physically.
And it does accept 5V input like USB-C standard foresees.

It may not work like you think/want most devices work with USB-C but that doesn’t change it is a real USB-C port.

But this only confirms the whole USB-C topic is a true hot mess …

And - only for the record - if you really-really want to power it with a “smart” USB -C power source, you can add to it a couple 5.1kOhm resistors:

Or you can use a so-called USB-C decoy pcb.

The Ax lite needs 5V, needs around 8-10 W and comes with a power adapter rated as 2.4A@5V, i.e. 12 W.

Some history, to put things in perspective:

The original USB (1.0/2.0) implementation (as a connection port on a computer) allowed maximum 500 mA@5V.
The USB 3.0 raised that to 900,A@5V
The USB 3.2 raised that to 1.5A@5V.
And the connector was the A type.
The various manufacturers of power supplies (often connected with mobile phone manufacturers) started to make power supplies with 1,2,3A @5V still with the USB A connector and “no questions asked”, if the power supply can give out 3 Amperes, it will give them out.

Then they started to develop the various quick-charging schemes, raising voltage and thus power.

When the good guys developing the USB-C standard came (late as always) managed to make it extremely complex trying to cover all the existing de facto standards, reaching a stupidly high power delivery level (now 5A@48V, aka 240W :open_mouth: ) so they couldn’t risk to fry half the old devices.
Anything more would need a negotiation between the power supply and the powered device, requiring a specific chip on both the power supply and the powered device.

Then they carved an exception for delivering 3A@5V if the presence of the two resistors was found.

So in theory (and also in practice) adding two tiny resistors to the Ax lite is enough (provided that the power supply at the other end of the USB-C cable is fully compliant).

I will happily pay $0.02 more per ax Lite to get the freedom of carrying only one USB-C power supply with me on trips.

While they’re in there redesigning, I want a version that will plug into the laptop’s second USB-C port and not only vampire power from the laptop while it’s charging, but also provide it a USB-C Ethernet interface so that I can leave my USB-C to Ethernet adapter behind, too. Now we’ve got a five-port device with no power supply.

That I’ll happily pay another $10-20 for, the cost of the extra adapter.

Yep, and very few people will have the guts that gwynbleidd demonstrated on that thread (besides the ability to do the - complex even if not micro - soldering) voiding the warranty..

I still believe that an external USB-C decoy/PD trigger adapter + a short USB-C pre-terminated cable is the way to go for these cases, the stuff should be available from aliexpress (if you can wait the delivery time) for around 5$ and maybe 10-15$ on amazon or similar(no need to solder, there are types with screw terminals).

For use with the Ax Lite or similar (only max 3A@5V), there are small pcb’s with already the two resistors soldered and a female usb-c connector, so that one needs to solder only the +/- of the short usb-c cable with the male connector.

The problem is that Mikrotik does not state that’s only physically a USB-C port, but not electrically. This is false advertisement and is both unacceptable and illegal.

Think of bolts.
When you buy a “standard” steel bolt (say) M10 all you can expect is that it will thread correctly in a M10 thread or nut, there is nothing telling you the quality of the steel (it is usually 6.8, but it can be lower, usually unmarked).
If you want a “high resistance” bolt you need to make sure it is either 8.8 or 9.8, or 10.9, etc. (and it will usually also be marked as such on the actual bolt).

Someone stating that the usb-c socket on the HAP ax is illigegal won’t get your bolt analogy. :joy: “a bolt is a bolt. can be threaded in. must be a bolt. When you have a hammer, everything is a bolt.”

They should call it a Type-C port if they aren’t going to support any of the USB protocols.

I know of a pair of competing vendors in a section of the computing hardware world far outside of networking that use Type-C connectors for data transfer, but with a proprietary non-USB protocol. Both of them require that the cable be plugged in one direction only, even going so far as to have a “T” embossed into the included cables’ plug housings to indicate which is the “Top” side.
