I plan to use a Mikrotik device as VPN server to allow remote workers to access the internal network of the company. I plan to use Wireguard server and NHAS/WAG for MFA TOTP. I found two devices with similar price and the following key features for the task:
hAP ax3
- Announced as “Home access point”
- Quad core CPU 1800 Mhz
- 1GB RAM + 128 MB NAND
- WiFi 6 2,4 and 5 GHz
- IPsec hardware encryption
L009UiGS-2HaxD-IN
- Announced as “Router”, console port, rack mountable and professional aestetics
- Dual core CPU 800 Mhz
- 512GB RAM + 128 MB NAND
- WiFi only 2,4 GHz
- IPsec hardware encryption
L009UiGS-2HaxD-IN looks like a professional choice, but hardware in hAP ax3 clearly outperforms it. Both use RouterOS v7. There are published IP Sec test results only fort hAP ax3. Both products retail about 130 to 150 euros.
My concerns are as follows:
Do both can act as routers?
Do both can act as VPN servers?
Can I expect overheating on hAP ax3 as L009UIiGS is better cooled?
Is it better to focus on the hAP performance and forget about the specific orientation of L009 to routicg and “rack device” image? May be better to rely on L009 expecting better functionality and additional features?
Which is the best device for this task?
