Ok… I’m an idiot. I didn’t think I changed the password for the admin login, but I must have since the password in the “drawer” isn’t working like it did at first. So… How do I do a reset of the device that also keeps the base configuration. In other words, it came with a base configuration and I want to factory reset it back to that so I can get password access again.
If you have any better ideas or have an idea why the original password isn’t working other than that I changed it, let me know. #noob
Otherwise, the device is working perfectly. I love it. I just want to be able to do more with it and I can’t without access to the device through Winbox.
Also, let me know if there were any requirements for setting the password.
Update: From what I can tell, push & hold the reset button, then plug in the power. Release reset botton once LED starts to flash. Then go into System → Reset configuration and then select default. Can someone confirm if this is the correct process?
If the password was changed (intentionally and you forgot, or unintentionally but then you don’t know it either) there is no way to get back in.
Not even with reset. You will need the password, which you don’t know.
The only option then is to netinstall the device, then it will come back to factory setting including the password as set on the label.
(assuming you also did not change thát … but if you did, you should know about it since it’s not such a straight-forward process)
When you say the password change is not such a straight-forward process, what do you mean? as I said, I am not sure I changed the password, but if I did, if I knew if it asked for a specific format for the password (special character? How many characters), it might help me remember what it was changed to.
Also, every where else I read says a reset will reset the password. Why is the ax3 any different? Since this is my only router, I don’t have the ability to do a netinstall… at least I don’t think I do.
Somewhere this year Mikrotik changed the default admin/ combo to a random password which is available on the label.
Changing THAT password is rather complex.
If you don’t know what I am talking about, you most likely never did this.
Netinstall can be done using a single computer (windows or Linux).
OK, then I didn’t change the password then. But if I didn’t change the password, why doesn’t the password combo of admin and the password on the label work? Could I have locked myself out with too many wrong attempts? If so, is there a timer to be allowed to try again?
Sorry these are basic questions and not one that forgets passwords. In this case, I tried so many different passwords until I remembered that the password was on the label which is why I am thinking I may have locked myself out.
Ok thanks. So I must have changed my password then if it required me to do that on first setup. One last question. When changing the password, are there requirements for the password? This may help me to remember what password I may have used. Things like:
how many characters?
what type of characters are required (capital, number, special character)?
Bonus question: Does the Mikrotik allow infinite password tries as default? I would really like to avoid going through the netinstall process if I can.
Thank Rextended. I will try one more thing before doing the Netinstall. I will connect directly to the router instead of through a dumb switch and see if there is any change. It is frustrating since I know exactly what I changed the password to as long as there aren’t any special characteristics to the password. And the password doesn’t work.
