hap ax3 very strange noise from inside (ticks like a fan) - is it normal?

I hear very strange noise from inside my new hap ax3. It looks like a working of small fan (but as I know there isn't fan). It not a very loud, from distance over 40-50cm it unheared totally. Sound is appering after router is full booted up. I tried differents psu’s but it not help.

Is it normal?

That does sound weird. It almost sound like something is shorted and internal power supply is in hiccup mode. Or like something is arcing internally but at only 24V I doubt it…

Router is working normally ? Did you check if USB is working ? Antennas are tightly screwed ?

Router is working normally. I testing it ~3 days. USB is working too. I rechecked both antennas and they are screwed completely tight.

I tested router with 12V psu also - no difference.

After some additional testing, I found that this clicking sound is appearing when 2Ghz wifi is enabled.

If you bought it new then I would suggest you to return it to your distributor and explain what are you experiencing.

I turned on my ax3 just to check if I hear the same sound and I don’t hear anything on my unit.

Sadly, a couple of hours ago I got answer from my distributor that is the variant of coil/inductance whine and it's acceptable. They doesn't devices exchange without any malfunctions in functionality.

Very disappointed experience for me...

Usually it can be dampened putting some (specific for electronics, not the bathroom acetic kind) silicone caulking paste around it, but likely if the device is new opening it/modifying it will void your warranty.

What usually works good is hot glue if the component doesn’t get very hot. But yea, if it’s just a coil whine then it’s nothing serious and it’s not loud at all so I would leave it as is.

I got answer from mikrotik official support today about this issue:

If the device is still covered by warranty, please follow one of the options below:

If you have purchased this device directly from MikroTik, please use the RMA system in your distributor account and start a warranty process by referring to this support ticket with a precise "Problem" name and "Problem description".

If the device was not bought directly from MikroTik, please contact the distributor or the company you bought the device from, and ask for RMA warranty repair and further instructions.

You can refer to this issue number: SUP-213623

Looks like the official mikrotik support doesn't think this weird sound is normal…

Some clarification from mikrotik support:

The sound produced by the device is not expected during normal operation and typically indicates a hardware fault.

If the device is still covered by warranty, please contact the distributor or the company you bought the device from, and ask for RMA warranty repair and further instructions.

I sent the device back to the seller today and am waiting for a decision.

This is actually quite common. With a good ear and in sufficiently silent surroundings you can hear quite a few bits of electronics.

Whether yours is within the normal range or not cannot really be determined over the Internet.

I think you (and support) made the right call - if this is sufficiently more pronounced than other electronics you have, that is a cause to return it. That said, it probably wouldn't affect the life or functioning of the device.

Well that’s good to know…

Most of the time you get rejected because coil whine doesn’t affect device operation, it’s just annoying.

Similar thing is with dead pixels on monitors. You need to have certain percentage of dead pixels in order to get your screen replaced. That also depends from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Well, not really-really, dead pixels are normated:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_13406-2
now:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9241#ISO-9241-302,_303,_305,_307:2008_pixel_defects

If the manufacturer declares the screen as Class 0 or class 1, it is easy to determine if the relative parameters are exceeded.

And of course they are more "objective" and easily measured than coil whine that has both loudness and frequency.

I.e. very UNlike dead pixels, replacement for a coil whine is largely up to the manufacturer/reseller/assistance judgement and good will.

Never knew about that… I had dead pixels twice and only one pixel was dead almost in the middle of the panel. It was super annoying and when I tried to claim warranty they said to me that certain percentage must be dead… Probably referring to what you posted.
