hAP lite - wireless repeater not working

Hello,

I have tried almost every resource/tutorial and script to get this thing to function as a repeater. I have all 6.35.2 installed along with wireless-rep. I cannot get the hAP lite to work using the repeater set-up from winbox using both the CLI and GUI. I’ve tried about 10 times. Directions from here: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Interface/Wireless#Repeater from this thread: http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/universal-repeater-why-mikrotik-cant/96534/1

I downloaded and went half speed through this video (because its fast) got pretty far. It shows both the automatic and manual methods… but ultimately had a problem with wlan2 port being disabled on Bridge1.

That seems to be the main issue as far as I can tell, wlan2 or the virtual AP will not act as a designated or enabled port on the bridge.

I have managed to connect a non-mikrotik ap and connect to the internet with via ethernet, but I had to use 2 different tutorials and it is not what I want: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Connect_to_an_Available_Wireless_Network and http://dumbpcs.blogspot.com/2013/06/using-mikrotik-rb751g-to-bridge-to-non.html

Side note:

There is no clear “This is how you do XYZ”, step by step anywhere that I can find. The wiki wants you go to 5 different places to get something done. The wiki is… how to say this nicely: not good.

Case and point: Make a simple wireless AP… http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Making_a_simple_wireless_AP
Well it shows the two most brain-dead aspects of making a wireless AP. The wireless interface button and the mode you should use. Then the hardest parts are left out… basically, go figure out DHCP, IP addressing, and NAT… also figure out how to wire them properly to the interface you created with this tutorial. :imp:

I commented on Reddit and other places in regards to this as well. The documentation for RouterOS is beyond mind-numbingly frustrating. There are pieces scattered about and if you haven’t worked with RouterOS for years the learning curve is worse than VIM or Emacs. I can use VIM and Emacs.

This is what I did:

  1. Enable wireless-rep package on both access points
  2. The access point I use as repeater → in the webinterface go to wireless → double click on the wireless interface you’d like to use
  3. Select button ‘Setup repeater’ (on top of the page)
  4. Select the wlan interface
  5. At ‘address’ fill in the mac address of the other wireless accesspoint you connect with (the mac address of the wireless interface)
  6. At ‘SSID’ fill in the name of the wireless network you connect with and you like to repeat
  7. At ‘passphrase’ fill in the WPA key you’re using for the wireless network you’d like to repeat
Last step → Click on the start button on top of the page and you are ready

It worked flawlessy on a HAP AC with a RB951G-2HnD as repeater.

Thank you for the response Marino… I’ve done the steps you have outlined several times. I’ve done it on the CLI (terminal) and through the GUI (winbox). I’ve done it manually setting up each piece and I’ve done it with the setup repeater button.

I am beginning to think that repeating is simply not possible with the hAP lite RB941-2nD-TC. Either that or there are some bugs in the 6.35.2 wireless-rep package for this model… Not sure how to proceed.

Hi!

Maybe a dump question but i am not sure …

When i setup a wireless repeater, have i connect a lan cable to the hapLite?

In my opinion it should not be necessary, but as i said, i am not sure

It is definitely possible. Just check you did all settings correctly and upgrade to latest stable version.

Hi there! Have a question about dual-band Mikrotik APs. Are they capable of extending both 2.4&5Gz networks simultaneously when working as a repeater? Or only one network can be chosen to extend at a time?

Both wlan interfaces are independent. If there are two wlans. Just note that there are devices that can work in one band or in another having only one wlan interface. The limitation is obvious then, because only one band can be set at once.
