Hey y'all, I have two RB5009 in two of my houses, and on both of them I noticed the SFP+ cages I installed (an LC transceiver on one, and an RJ45 on the other) are almost impossible to remove. I managed to remove the LC transceiver on one but almost broke it, and now the RJ45 just won't come off.
Is there a weird dance or sequence to remove these damn cages? Help a brother out!
You are unlocking the SFP by folding down the lever/handlle on the face and not just pulling, right? I have a number of Microtik devices (RB5009, CSS610, CSS318, CRS305), and SFP/SFP+ devices come out with no issues IF unlocked. (I missed the tab on an RJ45 SFP once, and had issues as you describe.)
Exactly - folding lever down first, then pull. For my LC transceiver, I almost bent/damaged the lever; the RJ45 just doesn't move at all...
Interesting . . . I have a selection of HP, Finisar, 10-GTek and a few others, and every one slides out easy once unlocked. (Can't speak to the MicroTik SFP's though . . . More $$$ that needed, and what I have works flawlessly).
You should try first pushing in the module, then unlock it, then pulling it out. This mostly helps, but I´ve seen some broken SFPs (10years ago), where I had to use a screw driver to force it out of the cage. (btw. cage is the thingy which accepts the sfp modules). Forcing the SFP out might destroy the cage, so I would rather try to take the whole router apart and somehow free the stuck SFP without brute forcing it out.
