I can tell from other posts that I am not alone. I have been through three or four new motherboards and spent a ton of time experimenting with disks, and nics as well. I am tired of experimenting. Just saying that it is supported by MT is no longer an adequate answer. It isn’t true. MT is great stuff . . . But, finding newer hardware that works well with MT is a challenge. PCI bus slots are disappearing or are limited. PATA has all but disappeared. And, what PATA is available won’t talk to a DOM.
So, here are my requests.
First, I believe we should be allowed to see what the Linux kernel configuration of the MT looks like so that we can chose hardware.
Second, we need a forum about hardware. If you have had good luck with a motherboard, or hardware configuration, please share.
With this information, we should be able to build a list of known good, workable hardware. This information would be of great value to anyone who would like to use MT.
And, last but not least, I am aware that the MT guys would rather not discuss virtualization as some do not believe that there is any benefit, or that it complicates matters. But, if the hardware could be virtualized and MT run as a guest OS, we wouldn’t be as concerned about hardware compatibility any longer. And, we could install MT into a VM that is stored on a RAID array . . . we could back it up with snapshots . . . And, at least in our case, we could deploy MT in fail-over configurations. It would add a whole list of abilities to MT just by being able to be virtualized.
Thanks for listening.
I’m not sure why you have these troubles. When we order testing gear, we just order what’s available and we are not looking at model names. Everything works always, we have not yet seen a motherboard that doesn’t work. If you have troubles with something, better post what board doesn’t work. As I believe there should be a list of ‘not supported devices’, not ‘supported’.
OK, PATA is almost gone, but v3 works with SATA and v3 is pretty stable now, we use only that in all our networks (even live ones). v3 also has 2.6 kernel and lots of new hardware support.
Not so sound disrespectful, but, we know. New hardware is supported in V3. But, it isn’t supported in V2.9. And, last I checked V3 is beta. I do not intend to put 600-700 pppoe customers on beta software.
My only point is that by the time V3 is generally available and released for public consumption, there won’t be hardly any new hardware available on which V2.9 will run properly. So, unless there is some sort of release of information about what support is compiled in V2.9, and an accounting of the new hardware that people are using and having good luck with V2.9, everyone running pre-V3 are stuck with hardware that is a couple of generations old.
Don’t misunderstand. I am not angry at all. I am speaking out of frustration. MT is great software. But, we are stuck. And, FWIW, I imagine that the RB44G VLAN discussion is following the same path. It has likely been fixed in V3. But, most of us are still using V2.9 maintenance releases.
So, we will wait patiently for V3.
I do believe it would be nice to at least post the revision level of drivers on the supported hardware list. . . ie, the revision of the intel 1000 unified driver and other 3rd party stuff.
