Hi,
I am trying to replace the AVM Fritzbox machines with something new because I need VLANs to separate subnetworks.
I think this combination would work:
Draytek Vigor 167 as a VDSL modem.
Mikrotik hEX S (2025) as a router
CRS328-24P-4S+RM as a layer 2 switch (I need POE out)
NetBox 5 ax as access points
Im not shure about the Router OS - can I manage all the abomve Miktrotik machines with the same Router OS? On which machine ist the Router OS configuration done?
Does anyone see any problems with this setup?
Thanks!
In the MT world there is no “central place” used to manage all devices from. All routers/switches have their own configuration syou have to set one by one. CAPSMAN for WiFi is the closest thing you think of, but it’s just for WiFi connectivity.
It depends on where you want yo place the access point. If it is right beside the other equipment, you can probably use hap ax2/ax3 instead of the hex s. If you plan to put the access point somewhere else then go for a dedicated access point device. Cap ax for ceiling or wap ax for wall mount. Then it also is important to know how large the area is that you need to cover.
There ist also the option to keep the Fritzbox disable the wifi and just use a Network port behind the Frizbox as WAN connection… in most normal cases the double nat should not be a Problem… if you want to expose services it is a little bit more involved…
I use Vigor 167 for many many years and it just works. I advise against using Mikrotik WiFi, if you want a quiet life. Get something else. CSS610-8P-2S+IN is a very good switch with PoE.
Mikrotik’s “ax” devices are quiet good. You keep spamming everywhere that people should not use Mikrotik WiFi devices… “ac” was problematic, “ax” is quite good
I’ve had Mikrotik WiFi for more than 10 years, so I guess I’m entitled to have an opinion. And this 10 years was mostly “ac” and I don’t feel like I want to sponsor Mikrotik to try another 10 with AX. And I am pretty happy with another vendor’s Wifi 7, which does all needed for 10 minutes setup and forget.
