I could use some advice on the next iteration of a volunteer project I started almost 8 years ago. The goal was to provide free wireless connectivity to the general public in medium size building (2 floors ~500 ft long).
Over the years I’ve had to “update” the infrastructure (bullets below) a bit to keep up with increases in utilization and I think it’s about that time again. Currently I am seeing a max of about 70 concurrent users (evenly dispersed) connecting to the network and am starting to worry about over subscribing the access points.
1st: 3 x wrt54g - 1 router 2ap
Next: 4 x wrt54g (dead spots) - 1 router 3ap
Then: 1 x wrt54gl (tomato firmware) + 3 x wrt54g
Latest: 1 x asus rt-n16 (tomato usb-no wifi) + 3 x wrt54g
The latest setup has been rock solid for the last 2 years. Users connect phones, tablets, and laptops mainly and mostly use the network for web browsing but often times gaming and p2p file sharing. Signal strength is decent everywhere and I never get complaints. Internet is 20x3 charter cable. Wireless G only is fine for now as all traffic is out to the wan and there is no interference. All AP’s are connected directly to the asus router via ethernet.
I will be using 4 x Ubiquiti Unifi APs (regular or LR?) and want to replace the asus rt-n16 with something more powerful from mikrotik. What do you guys think? Is the RB450G the product I need?
Thanks in advance
