Hi Guys and Girls,
Not new here, just been in the shadows because working in IT is truely mundane in this country with the closed minded employers and businesses. Thankfully i’ve been fortunate to not have theses morons destroy my passion for networking and infrastructure.
Hope all of you are well.
Loved MikroTik since first using it in 2009 after being introduced to it at an R&D business. I was immediately impressed.
I’ve been browsing the forum today, looking for opinions on current best wired core or breakout router. I’ve got lots of time with Covid Lockdown here in South Africa. So decided to formalise my home network and make it “truely smart”, in my opinion and how I understand it, network.
Have always had a Mikrotik providing wifi and management there of in the home, but suddenly ended up with several internet solutions. So connected them to a little hAP lite TC i had laying around. this device holds up quite well. I am impressed. Just one note, don’t use a power source below manufacturers recommended .7A to power it.
I ran out of capacity however with an overnight increase in number of internet connections now sitting at 12, 9 primary and 3 backup spread through out the mesh network, spread accross 3G, 4G, LTE & Fibre, depending on the limitarion of the hardware like Huawei E1752 for instance…LOL. It’s stable though. Anyway, luckily I found an RB2011. Using the USB port for backup failover as well.
I am enjoying the freedom of bypassing each links limitation by using Mangle to specify which link/s to use at which time/s of day, by load or cap. But within a week, thinking of going bigger. either RB3011 or RB4011, not for the wifi, but for the processing specs.
My network consists of a gigabit core switch, but I think I should upgrade this to 10G, with a hAP in each room to cover and segment each space for associated equipment, of which there is perhaps to much in each room. lol, all of this is connected to the RB2011 currently. fairly simple setup, using simple queues, broken down by each internet link, by each device based on it’s ability to hop accross any and all links available, with failover. Just haven’t bothered to bond or load balance yet.
My breakout RB2011 has a link to an Omnitik which I sourced some time ago and messed with here and there. I use this to share access with friends and family. This also uses the USB for failover for all, if the upstream link to RB2011 fails for whatever reason, as well as being connected to SXT’s for further ptp links sharing fibre, and also providing those fibre sharers with failover at the OmniTik or access to my links when their’s fail depending on their peak requirements.
I am thoroughly enjoying it with all this time i have on my hands..
Personally I enjoy pulling links and seeing who complains and amazingly no one…always on internet…absolute magic…and Kudos to MikroTik…without your hardware we’d all be limited to what features and requirements manufacturers decide is good for us.
Many Thanks
