I’m trying to recover my RB from a vegetative state! Just serialed into it and loaded a new bios. so now theres no kernel… cause i formatted the whatumacallit. How do I upgrade the firmware or OS now? Every file ive tried says ‘invalid file id’ or something like that.
If anyone can help, please,
put me out of my misery (with a solution - not a shotgun)
I’ve got the same problem on a RB112. I can access it via the Serial port but it will not boot into RouterOS. Are the boards recoverable from this state?
Managed to fix it, you need a null modem type serial cable. connect via hyperterminal. when you power up the router you should see some text coming up and something that says ‘press anykey with 1 sec for menu’
try to do that. you will then get a menu. press menu option ‘o’ then ‘e’, this will set it to ethernet boot.
Get the program called netinstall (the one for the RB not the one for windows). you select the OS you want to upload and then power up the RB it should pick it up and you can load the OS up again. This took me hours to figure out.
I did all the above, but the netinstall program does not pick up the routerboard after I change the boot method to ethernet. In Netinstall, I clicked on the Net booting button, and check the Boot Server enabled box, and left the IP address at 192.168.1.1. My computer’s ethernet address is 192.168.1.233. I rebooted the RB, but it is never picked up by the Netinstall program. I even tried another RB that I knew worked to make sure there was not a problem with the ethernet port of the one not working. Any ideas as to the problem?
i did all sorts of stuff in the serial console before i got mine working. formatted stuff etc. dont know if that has relation to get it working again.
My RB didnt even have an IP address anymore, it was completely dead.
