Hello.
I’m getting ready to setup a 10.5KM PTP link using RB411 board w/ XR5 and 27dbi L-Com Grid antenna at both ends. According to Radio Mobile profile it seems is a clear shot. But, I have to cross a town that has a lot of interference and I’m not sure if these equipments are enough. I’ve read others have created longer ptp links but, don’t know the scenarios.
I am trying to test everything before installing on the towers. Looks like the XR5’s have a 10dbm offset, there are the Tx power, Real Tx Power, and Total Tx power. When I changed the power from the default to 25dbm and changed back to default I never get the default value the card originally had of 28dbm. I have to reset the board configurations in order to get these value back. I would use this value since is the highest value I can get.
Now, I don’t know what other tweaking I need to get a good connection betweeen the ptp bridge. I don’t know if I should use NStreme since I’ve never used it and don’t know how it works.
To those with experience, please help me set up a high quality link by setting up some values on the routeros.
Your help is very appreciated.
Thanks in advanced for your time and help.

Leave the TX power settings alone. ROS has correct default power settings for the XR5 and you are risking burning out your card by tinkering with the power levels.
Just update your ROS to latest version and try to make the link. 10.5km with XR5 and 27dbi dishes should work even with interference/noise. Only thing that will hurt you is line of sight issues. If as you claim the link is clear then go for it.
There is only so much dilligence you can do before you just have to throw everything up on the tower and see what the result is.
You should always, always use Nstreme. I do not understand why so many people come to this forum complaining of link issues and not try nstreme. For my long-distance PtP links they were the difference between them working and not working.
Today, I put up the two ends and I’m not able to see neither one when I do a scan. I really don’t know if there is LOS because like I mentioned in my ealier post: Radio Mobile shows a clean shot but, there are too many tall trees that might be interfering. Radio Mobile only shows terrain and not trees, buildings, etc… So is difficult to know if there is a “REAL LOS”. I’ll probably be needing bigger antennas. I’ll try to do some changes tomorrow.
do you really have a tower 100ft up and 56ft up? That link looks totally doable. Your RadioMobile shows .15w which is only 150mw. The xr5 should be .6w. Dont change the power settings in RouterOS for the XR5, it already knows the offset and thats why it shows real vs total. That link should be no problem unless there truly are trees 50-80ft tall in the way.
I do have two towers, one is actually 120’ tall on two stories and the other end is 60’ on one story. The power on both XR5 are set to default, havent’ touch it. There are tall trees all around the area but, it looks doitable. Is there an utility or software I can use to see if there are any obstruction in the way?
I just wanted to let you know that I was able to do this ptp link. I noticed the alignment was off on both sides (don’t know how it happened) so, after readjusting it the link was perfect. I was surprised it worked. First time I’ve done such long ptp link, longest for me yet.
Thank you all for your help.
