hEX PoE // Powersupply

Hi everyone,

I’ve brought a hEX PoE Router. But I noticed that my PoE supported AP (AP130 from Aerohive) doesn’t boot up. So I’ve connected a PoE Switch as the power supply for the Router and it works fine.

The delivered Power-Supply is a 24V 2.5A. I guess I need a better Power-Supply (like 48V 2.5A). Sadly, I have no clue about this stuff.

Can someone recommend a Power-Supply?

Thanks in advance…

Indeed you need 48V power supply. Any 48V power supply rated at least at 1A would do (but get some beefier one if this RB will deliver power to additional devices, up to 2.5A), just be careful about the DC plug dimensions. According to MT support, all routerboards feature same barrel-type power receptacles: 5.5mm outside and 2mm inside diameter, female, pin positive plug.

The hEX can’t handle 48V.

Its PoE is passive PoE, not af/at. Take a look at the spec sheet:

https://mikrotik.com/product/RB750Gr3

… and doesn’t do PoE out.

But OP mentioned hEX PoE which handles 48V and can do 802.3af/at on output.

Geez, my mistake. Sorry about it. Today I shouldn’t have got out of bed… can’t concentrate on anything!

Same thing, happened to me. I contacted support. They replied fast that I need 48V power supply. Strange decision from Mikrotik to bundle 24V with PoE router, but …
So I bought http://www.wirmax.net/en/power-supply/699-gm-4820-48v-2a-power-adapter.html. It’s not original Mikrotik, but it cost me 14 Eur instead of 39 $.
So far, I’ve tested only with TL-POE10R PoE splitter and it’s working. Next week I’ll plug also Reolink IP camera, so I can give you update.

It is not surprising at all. I expect most people to be using this device to power other Mikrotik devices, and those are fine being powered by 24V Passive PoE.

Did you try? Reolink works? Which Poe camera?

Actually what is surprizing is that you are thinking so myopically. I had every intention to use MT POE to power a number of devices. I was not POE spec aware and to add confusion often one device will say watts and another device will say amps LOL and thought okay POE is POE and not until it didnt work that I realized that MTs POE like its wifi5 is an abomination that must be eliminated.
I have converted to UGLY poe boxes that need separate power and a cable mess. (until I replace all poe needs with actual switches that meet standards).

To answer myself - MikroTik RouterOS 6.48.1 - hEX PoE.
PoE works with Reolink 48V cameras (520a and 511).
Both PoE port leds are RED - is this normal - don’t know!

I am powering my unit via PoE IN (48V) because provided adapter is only 24V (and it is a big heavy brick btw).

520a examle:

  • current: 98 mA
  • voltage: 48.2 V
  • power: 4.7 W

As far as I know, POE in to power the hex is probably standard but outgoing POE to passively power other devices is like 1/2 of the standard, it may power MT access points etc but I would use it with caution for any non MT devices.

The Quick Guide says:

Once PowerOutput is enabled in RouterOS, the Ethernet LED adds red color to it (green means Ethernet link is made, red means power but no link, red and green both means there is link and power).

Geez Sindy, go with your gut feeling, forget the blinking lights lol.

hex poe lite (RB750UPr2) can pnly accept 8-30VDC while hex poe (RB960PGS) can accept from 12-57VDC
another options is CRS112-8G-4S-IN where you can put dual power supply; low volt 18-28VDC and high volt 48-57VDC

but remember, the higher of voltage output than the lower the ampere of current.
