I have set up VPN on my Mikrotek router board. I can connect to my home network from iPhone. I am able to open control panels for devices in the network from the browser. But if I use app instead, then it never loads. What might be the problem and where should I look?

What app?
Apps are designed to access your device via the cloud, not a direct internet connection.
Suggest if the app is capable of doing that, then its in the settings of the app somewhere.
Maybe Mikrotik app ?
Then your VPN needs to be active (since I will assume everybody is smart enough not to open that passage directly via internet).
Does your name start with V?
