hotmail issue (solution)

Please try this and report:

There appears to be a bug in IE (and possibly in squid - used in the
RouterOS proxy server). Firefox is reported to work fine with hotmail,
therefore the suspicion on IE – this is not verified.

While there is no patch for squid which will solve this problem, the only
solution is to not use transparent web-proxy for hotmail pages.

Here are some suggestions:

There are 2 ways to detect hotmail requests (none of them is tested by us):

  1. by destination ip address
    (http://www.mail-archive.com/squid-users@squid-cache.org/msg24160.html);
  2. by url (content filtering, description follows)
  3. or do not use the transparent web proxy for all connections

To fix the problem try this
IP | Firewall | Dest. Nat |

under your redirect rule…

Add this line to Content | under the advanced tab

http://by2fd.bay2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin

This will solve the problem.

I tried this - now the cache is not working - watch your counters - they are not changing. Merry Christmas.

ok, we tested this and we tried these solutions.

bad news: you have to wait for a squid/IE/MSN fix. the workarounds mostly work, but are only a temporary fix because they simply make requests to msn go directly, not through proxy.

good news: the new web proxy (‘the proxy’) in 2.9 works fine. if you use that, or use it as a parent proxy for 2.8 - no MSN bug.

new 2.8 version is out, and there is a fix in it

Thanks for working on getting this fixed. We have had some customers complaining about problems with MSN (I’m assuming this is similar to the problem with Hotmail). Which package(s) contain this update (or, which packages needed to be updated to get this fix)?

‘system’ obviously. also, msn = hotmail.
